how about polished 7" alloys kel - best of both worlds.

I've got for a set of 7"s for my mex but do also like the polished 6" alloys.

Surely it depends on yourself LOL...

7's look better, but need bigger rubber and might catch LOL....

Kel

I know what your saying, but I can run the same tyres on 6's without the walls being streched on the 7's.

but I am swaying to stay with the 7's

I'm usually an advocate for 7's, but in this instance the 6's win all day long in my opinion. Look at the pictures - the 6's look perfect. If you do decide to keep the 7's they HAVE to be black/polished - end of story!!

I'm perhaps swaying away from 7's now becuase I think RS's only look good when they're pretty low, and 7's will catch the front wings I've been told when you go reasonably low =(

All IMHO of course

makes me laugh people who do that...

fit the right size tyre LOL...

Kel
22-04-2005, 10:17
Steve, can you give me techie reason why this is a bad thing to do to see if they match up with my thoughts.

Measure inner bead of rim to inner bead, this gives you the ideal size...

an 8" MO has just over 8" bead to to bead....would be a 215mm tyre...

The proxies sit over the bead making the 225 the perfect tyre size, would be a 215 on slicks

I still want to buy the black wheel nuts from you !!!!

Would fitting the smaller tyre (195/55) on a 7 inch rim, cause the wall of the tyre give more than on a 6 inch rim, causing the rim to move Lateral within the tyre, basiclly cause a sence of dull turn in (if you get my meaning, being one for the track I sure you have come across that term).

22-04-2005, 12:43
Not sure what dull turn in means - no feeling ?

Whats the inner bead to inner bead on an rs rim....6 and 7....

205's on a 6" is way to big LOL, would think that 195 is too big to be honest....

I had 195's on my 7" mo's and they were the perfect size, handled very well....

Kel
22-04-2005, 12:50
On the car at the mo I have 195/55's on my 7's

Ford offered 195's for the 6's as per the Rallye sport parts book.

what I mean my dull turn in is, the reaction of turning the steering to the car changing direction.

dingy
22-04-2005, 12:58
Guess the rallysport book is for a road car tho isnt it and is it not a bit old hat ?

mine is instant from turning the wheel....

If the tyre is too big the wheel moves in the tyre then the tyre moves....

Needs to move with the rim..

These are the pictures that started the whole issue in my mind, check out the front tyre, I think the speed as around 50-55.

When turning in the car just feels so disconnected from the input I put in, when in the corner all is fine, its just the first input.

end of the day I have a 3rd option, the problem is me expecting to much, last time I drove a mk2 with any sort of pace was 1990 before I drove FEV last October.

and I could just be throwing my 7's out for my pram for no reason.

kel, i have an image of my rim hiting the tarmac under hard corning.

this is down to tyre choice and wall strength over actual width....

RS2000 standard steering rack bush's are utter shite by design and this has a lot to do with steering feel, aswell as the rack its self, what you got ?

Kel
22-04-2005, 14:12
supaflex poly bushes on

Inner TCA
Outer TCA ARB
ARB (Anti dive kit)

2.4 turn rack from Rally Design, plus new TRE & Poly bushed.

Done about 200 miles in total since these were changed.

Could be the rack, not sure...

But could be the tyres and the amount of grib over the tyre wall size...

Kel
22-04-2005, 14:21
Thanks for help Steve  , I had the same feeling with the std rack that was on the car from new, that was swapped for the RD one the std rack was lightly worn on the steering arm inner ball joints.

What I cant work out is how people live with 175/50's on 7.5's

I agree.

I'm going over time to have both, maybe the 6's will have track day tyres fitted.
