i started on the old girl yesterday, the long awaited transformation into top spec group 4 rallycar from nice steady roadgoing car.
Hopefully i will not be writing about it this time next year as the plan is to have it completed during the summer months and hopefully getting it up to Donington for national day.
The Fabricator is due on saturday to discuss the four link / Round turret, new floorpans, Panhard rod and the full welded in S/D rollcage (welded in to the turrets).
to those who have gone before me with this type of project, please have patience with me as i will no doubt ask all the usual daft questions, however hopefully i will end up with what i have always hankered for. (I never had the heart to do it to the white RS (i.e. Andons)
i will keep you all updated with pics and info, however i now enter the temple that is my garage, I have said goodbye to the wife, Kid, and Dog and told them that i will emerge (sideways) with the finished article in the fall of this year. (or when Tony Christie is no longer number 1 in the charts, whichever is sooner!).

You say Donington National Day/Weekend
Do you mean you will be on track ?

Hopefully on track.
Probably on the mic (i havent forgotten Dave !) on the saturday and hopefully out on track at some point.
Someones got to show you boys how to get a drift through redgate and out the other side down the craners.............
loads of photos to follow over the next few months, keep the encouragement coming (and the advice)
thats the hammer Graham i am so glad to hear this, the beast lives on and will come back fighting,
as for the white one i am taking good care of her, she is slowly getting some money spent on her (all sensible mods obviously). its a shame those rolltops you got are in a state, as a nice set is top of my list. the engine bay stays as it is for now, as i want to give her a few runs first.
anyway good luck, keep us posted with pics etc.
good luck mate!!!!

Hi andrew,
yes, the beast will live on, this time even more meaner and leaner.
Good to hear that the white one is doing well (i have been following your progress)- she looks gorgeous in the recent photos and glad that even your other half has now come around to liking the RS.
will keep you all posted.................

Ah Well,
Monday evening, no skin left on knuckles of either hand.
Managed to strip the following.
Prop, rear shocks, rear trailing arms, Exhaust (like fighting a great white !)
complete interior, fuel lines, anti dive/ double width/ and ARB (like fighting TWO great whites) rad, Ex manifold, washer bottle, hoses, starter, alternator, and loads of minor bits all carefully cleaned and put aside. Not a bad days work, the fabricator also came and agreed a date for the turrets, four link, panhard, Turret - linked roll cage and a few floor panels / general welding repairs etc.
Engine is basically ready for lifting out, however cannot get the (twin 45) dellortos off as the top centre inlet manifold nut is recessed - anybody got a "slim" 13mm socket to fit in to the recess ??(genuine plea)
will post some pics later,

Hi martyn,
thanks for the encouragement and support, much appreciated.
I have built (and rallied) many escorts over the years however i can at last afford to spend some serious money on the right kit rather than run it as fairly standard. I intend that this car will be right and a high standard of build and finish achieved
There are some photos i would appreciate, can you either email them, post them (here ?) or can i meet up to view them.
main ones i am after (for guidance only)
Rear turret installation
Four link installation
Panhard Rod installation
Although there are some sites with the pics, i cannot download or print them (can anyone help ? - Kel, Dave ? )
Additionally, i would love some photographs of your interior as it looks the mutts nuts and is the type of finish i would like.
i would contact you, however do not know your number, any chance you could pm me ?
cheeRS and thanks again,
Graham
what do you want printed, send me the link & I'll sort it for you.

Also my new state of the art chemical washing machine for all the nuts, bolts, screws, washers. simply place in clothes peg basket, dip into de greaser (old plastic sandwich box), swirl around and prod with stiff brush, hang to drip dry, and steam clean thoroughly.
Technology the welsh way.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/ice_fire_fur/DAD/car030.jpg
All the "white" holes in the engine bay are now redundant and will be filled with the mig, not too much rust on the old girl, and the top mounts are A1 condition, the worst affected area around the fusebox / heater panel.

bought some more bits for the car today, however, despite spending a (very) tidy sum of cash most of it will be unseen, however you just gotta have it.
The fuel tank and stand are of a high spec, note freshly cut lawn!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/new001.jpg
these bits should help it corner a little better - the rack is 2.2 (yes) turns lock to lock, and the alloy hubs should help with the unsprung weight.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/new002.jpg
new bilstein inserts, 190 llb standard height springs and new RBTM should settle it all nicely
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/new004.jpg
all nicely propelled by a straight cut 5 speed box (bought s/h after trying it in the Donor car
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/new009.jpg
and finally most of the wiring has now been stripped out, loads of surplus wires everywhere, some not connected to anything, others do do with the many alarm systems fitted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/new010.jpg
so far progress going well, however could do with a few pics of some twin pump layouts for the fuel, any one help ?

got the struts built up today, went ok although trying to fit the bloody circlip in the RBTM was a pain, spec consists of Alloy hubs, Vented discs, new inner and outer bearings, steering arms, Gartrac adjustable spring platform struts, new 300 / 70 bilstein inserts, new 270 llb springs, new RBTM, black wheel nuts, extended wheel studs and "standard" calipers now fitted,(note Red grease caps for front bearings, looks like Customs nose lol) just need to bolt to the shell (anyone any decent princess calipers for sale guys ?).
cost per corner excluding caliper and disc @£650.it would have been more only i done all the work myself and i had a friendly engineering company (Design and manufacture, Merthyr Tydfil) press the wheel studs into the alloy hubs).
wil soon have for sale a set of group 4 Bilsteins (World cup) complete.
For info i have added a pic of the Gartrac "threaded" front strut alongside the 2.8 strut i was originally going to use (now destined for brians stripped beastie, oops forgot, brians white beastie)

Following the trip to autosport, out came the cash (again) for some much needed goodies, especially a set of seat belts to go with the seats in the above pics.........
couldnt resist the Sabalt harnesses, 3" x 3" six points, date stamped and to FIA standards, should help keep even my frame in place, good price too
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/nifty1.jpg
Also on the lines of safety, it would break my heart if the car went up in flames (as we know they can do) therefore i was wanting to fit a decent plumbed in system, bought the lifeline 2000 4ltr system with electrical operation (didnt fancy having pull cables, and always wanted an electrical jobbie)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/nifty141.jpg
As with most of the "branded" gear i have bought, i purchased from Peter Lloyd Rallying (Bridgend) who was at autosport, absolutely first class advice and prices, if you are ever dealing with PLR, ask for Peter himself and say you saw it here

at some point in its life the gearbox tunnel had been the subject of a large hammers attention and was stretched to high heaven and extremely thin. Plating both sides has now considerably helped to not only re strengthen but also enlarge the area for that nice "standard" straight cut box.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/RSpreperation031-1.jpg
Front mounting point for rollcage also considerably strengthened, once all the weld has been ground down it will be a nice finish, judging by the similar type of work on the mini sat next to mine (not shown - the mini that is)

Is the plate you have for the cage leg sufficient area and the correct thickness .I usually make mine 250mm x 150mm minimum 2mm thick, srutiners(spelling ?):o are quite hot on safety ellements and it will be a real bas***d to have to re plate it when you have it all back together.
Just a point ,I'm not being picky but now what its like if you have to go start again when you think everything is ok.
Skids
Is the plate you have for the cage leg sufficient area and the correct thickness .I usually make mine 250mm x 150mm minimum 2mm thick...
Reinforcment plates for the main hoop and front legs must be a minimum of 120 sq.cm in area and at least 3mm thick for MSA sanctioned events...better hope the scruts' don't get too fussy checking yours if they're only 2mm!!
:)

Colour will remain black and when complete and all run in / shaken down will get a complete respray externally.

called in today basically to see when i could get it delivered back home, - should be in a couple of days time!!!
anyway, having looked at the car all it now requires is a little undersealing and so on, however did take some pics of further works, and despite the time taken, very pleased with the standard of work ..............
bit dusty in the garage at the moment, however four link, turrets, cage all nicely in, welded and seam sealed/painted

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/GrahamJohn/graham001.jpg
however, here we are, old one removed 'new one' sourced and all prepared below- i did ask for about ten tonne of underseal before it went back on though....

paul
The link brackets on Grahams axle are not positioned in what would traditionally be thought of as the 'normal' manner...in other words they are indeed upside down. They'll still work, it just means that there'll be less upward travel available before the top link bar hits the ceiling of the body box...shouldn't be a problem on a road/trackday car provided it ain't lowered too far.
;)
IT LIVES !
coming on nicely G
firework display soon then ;)

G.J., actually being serious for once here now - why is it/has it taken so long to get it back ? is it still not finished yet ?
:(
car has been (to date)
four linked
turreted
New sills, inner and outer
floor panels
engine bay gusseted
all 'unwanted' holes weld filled (what were some of those for)
sunshine roof taken out and made good
seam welded along chasis
A frames repaired
Gearbox tunnel replaced
General repairs to some body parts
Roll cage fitted (linked to turets) and strengthening plates fitted to floor
Skidded parts underneath car
Plenum chamber / grill removed, metal cut out, replaced, and plenum chamber / grill replaced
car has been shot blasted on underside (Now NO Rot)
Car shot blasted inside/engine / boot
Engine bay / Boot / Interior sprayed black
unbelievably, im just awaiting some minor works to the front wing and some paint to the roof, and delivery to home.
last week i said "**** it i'll take it as it is and finish off those bits when it comes home"
i still have to fit the -
Firewall.
New suspension
wiring
glass
seats and internals etc
New brakes front and rear (Discs courtsey of Fossie)
WCXM
Fuel / brake lines
Engine
in fact, everything!!!
it is a bare shell with only a set of front legs and an axle to keep it rolling.
the work done is excellent, it's just that i keep getting told "next week" and so on, however i will Definatly have it home for christmas, finished or not - cannot afford to lose two weeks of Valuable holiday time when i could be working on it.
Havent paid one penny to him yet therefore its not the usual tale, and the guy doing it is a really nice decent guy with high quality work, surely he would want the cash with Chrimbo around the corner..
will update by the end of this week:o
