Me and the wife have just counted that so far my car has been out 5 times so far this year.
Twice to shows and three doing local runabouts.
The weather in scotland is dire and I refuse to take it out if theres a black cloud Ive spent to much time on it to ruin it in a few minutes. At the weekends I have a young family and they come first also no rear seat belts for them.

Its got me thinking about selling up:eek: and getting something more usable on a daily basis as I reckon I could buy and run a nice evo or scooby on what the RS has cost sitting doing nowt in the garage.

It does look good as and ornament in the garage though and its not depreciating in value yet.:) and I still like the car and the old skool ford scene.

Anybody else have the same issues ?

As you've said , mk1/2 Escorts don't depreciate and they cost peanuts too run (especially if you don't drive them) so no point in getting an EVO etc with £200 brake pads , £1000 clutches and 10mpg when you drive it fast !!!!! You'll soon park that in the garage where it will depreciate another £5000 and be worth £1500 . :D

I have gone off Ford Fair, Santa Pod etc as I get more enjoyment from a mixed classic car show. Its been a busy year for us at North Wales Classic Fords with 9 shows under our belt this year with 2 planned for August and then our big weekend, 'The Snowdonia Tour' planned for 11/12 Sept ( a few places still available. 61 cars booked out of Max of 75 ).

We also drive our cars very frequently, going out for evening meals at varied locations and generally having a bit of banter. Occasionally we get caught out in the rain but hey - ho, it's no worse than washing your car ! It's the salt and grit you need to keep away from :o
We all love driving our cars up here as that is what they are for.....and every time we go in convoy we get the same reaction from people.....grins and waves :hello2: We love it.....so moral is..... get your cars out, otherwise it's a waste :(

Hi Neil,

Selling your car is using bad language as far as I'm concerned.;) I have been to about 7 shows and 2 tours this year with plenty of runs out as well, and I still have a few to go to before the end of the summer.

If you're going to worry about the rain every time you go out then no wonder you are not getting any pleasure out of it. Stop worrying about the rain as your car is not now subjected to the constant bobardment of lousey damp weather, salted roads and several severe winters that it probably had in it's previous life......this was when corrosion really set into these cars. Mine has been rained off several times this year and usually by the time I get home it has dried off. If it's still wet I dry it off, stick it in the garage, switch the dehumidifier on and forget about it.

Provided you have made a decent job of your restoration and have thoroughly protected the bodyshell with a decent undersealer/bodysealer, then your car will probably have more protection that it has ever had and so preventing or greatly reducing any corrosion from taking place.

Part of the experience of owning these cars is to drive them and enjoy them, if you are going to worry to this extent about a bit of wet then you will end up missing out. Do you worry the same if you wash it?

Keep your lovely car and learn to enjoy it, or else you might sell it to someone else and then see them enjoying it out in the wet instead.

Oh and get some rear seat bets fitted for the kids.:)

Tim.

Used it a lot this year but bloody hate driving the god awful lothesome thing! Sold my golf and bought an impreza sti. Fantastic to drive but the fuel bills are horrendous. Spares can be sourced at reasonable prices if you stay away from the stealers. ( front and rear complete brake discs and pads for mine............2k ) keep the escort as you will regret selling it aftrer all your hard work. I hate mine getting wet but, it is only water now and not salt etc.

Had mine 9 years and covered just 2317 miles in it in that time. This year I have reneged big time on my cosseting of the fuc-king thing; I now drive it, wherever possible, regardless of weather. Today drove it from Huntingdon to Daventry, taking in a 1 hour stopover at Sainsburys to do some shopping. I parked it, had loads of comments and attention before getting past said supermarket's doors to purchase cheese and wine. Came out to an immense rain storm and fish-tailed into the petrol station of said supermarket. If you ask me values are dropping on these now and my approach is just drive and enjoy. When the rust re-appears, just get the mig and the plate steel out..

Frosticles: You call yours a "God awful loathsome thing". That's only because you've created a monster and if you can afford an Impreza Sti, then surely you can afford to drive and absorb the costs of Summer driving your Mex. As you allude to, Summer rain is vastly different to the extremely damaging Winter soup of salt/water. I wouldn't drive mine in that, but for now, bring it on...

Hi Neil,

Provided you have made a decent job of your restoration and have thoroughly protected the bodyshell with a decent undersealer/bodysealer, then your car will probably have more protection that it has ever had and so preventing or greatly reducing any corrosion from taking place.

Tim.

I've cheated here, as living on a narrowboat for the past three years has taught me about the true intricacies of corrosion prevention. Waxoyl is good stuff, but boat BITUMEN is better imo! My Mexico over the course of the next few days will be treated with 2 coats of Rylards Premium boat blacking on the underside. This is thicker than Waxoyl or underseal and will last 4 years immeresed fully in water before it starts to brittle. I have dared to cross the boundaries between automotive and marine sealing pretection and wager pure bitumen is better (though they are I will admit largely the same stuff repackaged!). This is a test I am prepared to rise too and given the cost of Waxoyl, the marine stuff is somewhat cheaper and just as easy to apply!!

I try to get out in my 1600 sport once a week to give it a run and keep all the internals coated in oil and stop stuff seizing up. I try to keep it dry but its pretty hard down here in NZ so it does get wet occaisonally. Not the end of the world though as its not like its living outside in the wet + the odd wet roundabout provides good entertainment haha :D

i use mine at least 3 times a week even if its nipping to the supermarket but i`m getting very close to my 3000 mile insurance limit as i taxed it a month earlier this year and i intend to tax it all year round this year and maybe up my mileage limit next year to 5 or 6 thousand miles.

Good on you too! I will do this nowadays, but have a little routine I go through before strolling in.

1) Make sure steel wheel centrecaps are OFF
2) Take HT lead OFF
3) Apply Disk-Lok
4) Only go to Waitrose or at a push Sainsbury's.... :D:clown:

Use the sport frequently between April and October. I wont go and get the car out if its pouring down with rain, but at the same time, if its rains when im out, so be it. Dry it off and put it back in the garage.

Have thoroughly enjoyed driving and enjoying it this year.

Been to several shows and tours. Wouldnt sell it for the world! :)

Although I do not (yet) have an Escort RS I have same sort of dilemma about owning/keeping/using my Impreza 22B. I haven't had it out this year(!) mainly because the weather was absolutely crap for the first 5 months of the year then my mega busy sumer working season began and I didn't even get to look at it. I absolutely love the car and would drive it more if the weather wasn't so crap- lets hope autumn is better than summer. I dont mind it getting wet and dirty occasionally but it does pi55 me off somewhat that EVERY time it comes out it gets totally manky! It does make me wonder about the sense of having a car like that but, like some escorts, it is an appreciating classic and therefore better than money in some scummy robbing bas7ard bank.

my mex hasn't been out at all this year :( as it needs a wee bit of work done and im only just getting my garage in a state where i can start to work on the car.
ive been gagging to take the car out but its mot is out now too. ive got fiona's mk2 more door to use anytime i want but its not the same as my mex.

the same as mrwatt my 17 month old baby girl is 1st priority after i get home from work and at weekends.
i was thinking about selling up but i know id be kicking myself big time if i did so as much as i hate seeing it sitting there unused, it can wait. i'll get to it and have fun again soon. :D
