Small wire on starter motor is the trigger wire to solenoid.
Make sure terminal connector is tight.
"Do dash lights dim when turning key and trying to start ?"
If lights dim then starter is possibly tight/seized.
Hope this helps as it is awkward not being at your car !!
cheers mate,
ill check to see if the light dim on the car inna sec, (you mean the head lights i assume...)
where is the starter moter in a mk2 :S - ive changed one on a pug 205 GTI, got any pics to show me where about it is please :)

hi i had a problem like this with my escort i started the car in the morning went shopping came back to the car and it wouldnt start i tried rocking it , wire connections etc .I called the AA out and found that the starter motor was knackered.
Have you checked to see if there is power to the starter if so this will indicate the starter being at fault.
:-)
have you checked that the starter solonoid on the inner wing is working properly . if you get some body else to turn the key , you can listen for a clicking sound comming from the relay . if you here a click ,then its working properly .if no click ,replace the solonoid . this could cause your problem.. i hope ..........

Try shorting out the solenoid on the inner wing with a suitable long screwdriver. If the starter turns then the solenoid is knackered.
hi chaps, thanks for the replies!
turns out a mechanic says the soleiniod is narked. so its being replaced :)
thanks again
