But who expected I would even get a reply ?

Heres what I sent to them

I run a website for Classic Ford Escorts www.rallyesportescorts.co.uk (http://www.rallyesportescorts.co.uk/) all our cars range from 1968 - 1981.
Will The Conservatives be reinstating the "Historic" Tax free status for vehicles when they attain 25 years old ?
Labour stopped this for cars registered post 1973 - I hope you will re-instate the rolling 25 year ruling and give a little something to many potential Conservative voters.

************************************************** ***

Dear Mr O’Neill,

I am writing on behalf of David Cameron to thank you for your e-mail.

Under the previous Conservative administration, we introduced a rolling measure so that historic vehicles would be exempt from paying vehicle excise duty (the tax disc) if they were more than 25 years old. This was designed to help protect the history and heritage our motoring and transport heritage. However, in 1997, the current Labour Government froze the rolling aspect of this exemption; introducing a fixed cut off date instead. This meant that owners of any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1973 would have to pay vehicle excise duty if they were not declared to be off the road (SORN).

We fully understand your concern with this issue. Under the current arrangements there is a real danger that the tax on vehicles registered after 1973 may become too expensive for enthusiasts to afford. This is particularly an issue when an enthusiast has a collection of several vehicles. Many owners may only tax them for a few months in summer or even take them off the road indefinitely. The current system limits the opportunities of seeing these vehicles on the road and the additional costs could prove so burdensome that they threaten jobs in the restoration sector.

We believe that examples of our rich motoring history should be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations to come. As we move further away from the 1973 cut off date, the argument gets stronger and stronger to revise the current system. Obviously, in the current financial climate, any change could only be taken after careful consideration of the fiscal impact.

Yours sincerely,

Nicola Sheldon

A carrot is better than receiving a 4 cough :D

Agree though it is good to get a reply that at least looks like someone has taken the time to read the original e-mail and not just sent a standard reply letter

Well done that man - I was planning on sending a similar worded letter to my local Tory MP, but seems you've answered that one. Looks to me like they are hinting more at a cumulative fee system relative to age. I'd be very surprised if they re-introduced the rolling 25 year system - but here's hoping!! We'll see, but they certainly recognise it as a subject that may attract 'floating voters'...

Me too no doubt, but remember asking the question BEFORE a General Election in many cases produces a response that WE the Voter want. After the Election the response may well be very different...

Well done for you asking Dave. And nice of them to take time to read you message, but it seems the last line is the killer:(.

Possibly and we all secretly knew this I suspect. It doesn't stop consideration toward a cumulative based system though. Even a small percentage decrease for vehicles registered from Jan 73' to Jan '81 say, would be a step in the right direction. Might not be much, but it's something..

sounds good,

it is true though waht they say, as alot of people don't use their old fords everyday, they don't so huge miles and often they only see the road for 6 months a year. so seems unfair to charge the full price.

if they don't make it free, i think they should just charge £20 for a year, or something must less than it should be, they will still be getting a fair few quid from it,

toyota prius is free tax and people use them everyday and damage the roads with them.

We can hope, but I suspect the figure would be significantly higher than that unfortunately.......assuming they would introduce some degree of change in the first place?? This has been a major issue for me in the time I've owned my Mexico and a contributory factor in why it has seen only minimal use since restoration. In almost 9 years of ownership I've only taxed it for an equivalent two years and even then claimed back the miniscule amount after 4 months on a six month fee.. Tight yes, but I'm a stubborn man of principle, even to the detriment of my own enjoyment. I have many interests, Escorts are only one of them. Any recognition of the need for a reassessment of the system would start to change my attitude on this..that and the fact that values (for me at least) are now approaching resto costs (with a little way to go).. Time tends to balance things a little.. :o

Certain fact is the current lot won`t get my vote :3some:

Well done Dave , I commend you for contacting them. problem is they are all politicians and play the game better than they hold up promises made on pre election. Hope they took on board what you asked for, maybe a joining of classic car forums on this one to boost the numbers behind the request might have more clout with them.

Dear Mr O'Neill,

I am writing on behalf of Kevin Cannon to thank you for your e-mail.

Under the previous RSOC administration, we introduced a rolling measure so that registrars would be exempt from expenses (the cash) if they were more than 25 years old.

Get voting for the Conservatives, better than the bunch of muppets that have brought this country to it's knees after being handed BALANCED BOOKS when they took over.

If Labour had never got into power in the first place we would all be on the road tax-free!!!!!!!!!!
