View Full Version : HT Rolling Road
[/URL]Had a long day on Friday 500 mile trip to HT at Brands hatch
had 3 cups of tea then another 500 mile drive home.
Was worth it though.

long drive that boys, nice to get a good result for all your efforts.just watch out you dont suck all that shiney paint off the inner wing into the engine;):)
Nice flat torque Gary!
Cant see it well in the scan but from 5700-8200
it drops just 10 lb ft:D

big hat and jacket........... sorry i couldnt arrange the weather:D,
good results gary, nice one
Ok i've just done some calcs on those figures and it don't add up so somethings wrong with the numbers .
Either the measured bhp at the wheels is wrong , the estimated flywheel bhp is wrong or both are wrong as the transmision loses are too small for the power level  .
If we use the measured wheel bhp number of 211 to calcualte flywheel bhp then :
211 + 10 divided by 0.88 = 251bhp (not 234)
If we use the estimated flywheel figure of 234 to calculate wheel bhp then :
234 -10 x 0.88 = 197bhp (not 211)
The quoted 10.4% transmission losses (on the dyno chart) are way too small for an engine as powerfull as this and that's why the numbers don't stack up .
Hope that makes sense . It doesn't matter at all , it's just that i'm interested in engines and rolling road numbers so i always check them when i see them (sad git) !!!! :D

Ok cheers for that , i'll work out the BMEP reading for you . :)
can i do a painting of your car on the rollers ? :D ;)

You just need management and throttle bodies to finish the job off :drunken:
With all the big horses motors on here now how about a Rallye Sport Escorts shoot out ?
Hally - Zetec
Frosty - Ex race engine
Cossi Si - Custom built Pinto (thats me Mr Custom - lol)
Gaz W - Ex Harris
RS2000CUSTOM - Self build Pinto
MK1Gaz - Harris
XpackBoy - MKII RS2000 Cosworth
Bob X Pack - Brett - Nasty Cossy
Brett - am sure he will knock up an engine for himself - lol
Am sure there are plenty more on here
Any ideas for a reliable accurate rolling road to use
or how about a visit to a number of rolling roads over a period of time to see how peoples engines progress and perform on different rolling roads
The site will fund a trophy for the most consitent performer and maybe others could put up prizes etc for best improved - biggest blow-up on the day - biggest smile on the day etc etc etc
Just for fun and all that

dont forget richyc ;)
Not forgetting anyone but do others think the idea could work ?
BMEP = bhp x 13000 divided by litres x rpm .
234 x 13000 divided by 2.1 x 8107 =
3042000 divided by 17024.7 = 178 psi :)
was only joking about his Torque :D
but how much those portable rollers cost to hire - shootout at the Lakes
There's a rolling road day for old Fords taking place at DS Automotive on their Dyno-Dynamics rolling road in June . I'll post up all the details in a minute and all cars from this site are welcome to attend . Should be a good day out . :)

A company local to me has access to one
Also Andy Galagher has one oop Norf in sweaty sock land so maybe he could be persuaded to come along
Then Martin C can come play in his Rofl special :D
i'd wanna see if andyc's could even make it up the ramp - also an exclusion zone of 500 feet in case something falls off :D

Ok it's on Saturday the 19th of June and RetroFord mag will be comming with the cameras . The Dyno is in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, it is a Dyno Dynamics 4 wheel rolling road and is at DS Automotives (http://www.dsautomotives.co.uk (http://www.dsautomotives.co.uk)) . :)

Arron said on friday that classic ford were having quick pinto shootout
at HT,sure he said it was next week.
I did ask about the % loss.
He said the % stays the same. Its just that the more you have the more you lose.
100 bhp - 300 bhp would lose 3 times as much, the % figure would be the same.

Yes they've got a pinto dyno day at H.T's soon but it's invite only i think and not thrown open to everyone . A couple of my mates are taking their cars down for it .
In regard to your quoted 10.4% transmission loses (22bhp) then that is not enough , the loses on 234bhp would be around 37bhp (197bhp at the wheels) . They may have set up the dyno so that the "coastdown" transmission loses are a bit lower to keep the estimated flywheel numbers a bit more realistic . Don't forget that a rolling road can only measure power/torque at the wheels and the rest is a guess . Hope that makes sense . :)

Its for sure invite only:cool:
Only one HT pinto on the rollers, should blow the rest away.:D

Did'nt expect to see the scots at HT on friday:eek::eek:
Proper power for sure, will make a very fast escort!!!
See you at the lakes.

No mate,no yellow mk2.....
Arron seemed surprised we were'nt going...just not enough power:p:p i guess.
Im deffo up for it dave
Got mine sort of running now , going to take it somewhere local to have it set up , then a trip to HT to have it properly set up .
print out I have here shows 181 bhp on the engine dyno on 50's , Ive gone down to 45's so expecting a bit of a loss there (how much do the experts think?)

Would be up for this as well. My engine came from a starlet grass track car that ran 180 at the wheels. Dunno what carbs it was on but is on 48's now

Well "peak" bhp numbers will drop maybe 10bhp but bottom end power will go up . Engine dyno numbers will be higher than rolling road numbers as they have an open inlet path to the trumpets (no engine bay/innerwing restrictions etc) , less heat as the engine is in the open and usually the engines on an engine dyno have no alternater fitted and horizontal exhaust manifold primary pipes . :)

lol , you should take the yellow one as it's one of the best pintos about and Tony needs another 2.2 to compare his to . :D

It was invite only mate and Arron don't want it a "HT" pinto shootout:D
