Bought this off FleaBay in April 2008. Advertised as "two week's work", this early RS (April 1976) had been stored for 19 years.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/Garage.jpg?t=1253752078
After turning it over, I wondered if it had been stored under water!

Well - you get the idea!
Cleaned off all the underseal and cr*p....
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/100_2573.jpg?t=1253753141
And it started to look a BIT better...
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/100_2795-1.jpg?t=1253753216
Had to wait for panels from Ex-Pressed but 6 months and £1200 later...

Started work properly in early 2009
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/100_3137-1.jpg?t=1253753695

However, work and home commitments stopped play until now.
THEN - I spoke to a friend who had moved away near Lincoln but had an Escort-shaped space in his garage (and he happens to be an ace welder) and - with a dangly carrot in the shape of a huge wedge of dosh- was persuaded to take over the job of at least getting the major structural work done. So the shell has been trailored oop Northwards and he has just sent me these pics:

OK. This project has upscaled since the last update! Following the discovery of the remains of an Australian shell (thanks Martin!!), the bulkhead and floorpan was liberated from it and transported up to join the program.
Poor Paul had to unstitch the work already done but we both felt this was a great opportunity to rescue this old girl from a lingering death by ferrous oxide.
I doubted the viability of doing this but Paul - and Martin - were confident. Let the pics speak for themselves - I owe Paul bigtime !!

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm made up with what Paul has done so far and to see such a change so quickly. And no - I have absolutely no plans to sell this baby. Coming from such an advanced state of corrosion, I don't think it will ever be concourse, but I'm building it to use as my own daily driver and for the satisfaction of seeing another broadstripe saved from being just a parts donor. Cheers. Chris

nice work matey it is moveing along nicely now
Think I remember this one on the dreaded e-bay when I was looking for my own Money Pit. Like you, I purchased what I thought was a running resto last March. And 18 months on, the rots finally replaced with good metal ! Good on you for sticking with it, most sane people would have given up by now! A little tip about the cost of parts and panels when the missus asks - LIE! Keep at it, it will be well worth it in the end.:)
Goming along nicely looks like a very big job keep up the good work it will be worth it when its all done
That's a lot of work!
Looking like it's all coming together nicely.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments guys. I feel a bit of a fraud as its Paul who has done all the hard graft so far, but there will be plenty for me to do when he hands me back a shell that has 100% more metal in it than it did when it left me!
Doing it this way with the bulkhead/floor transplant in one go should rediuce the amount of "fussy" work though. I know its gonna end up a bit like Trigger's broom but I don't care - at the end of the day, I'm the one who gets to drive it :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Your buddy is doing a first rate job, it must feel so good knowing you have all that solid metal in the car now , and so much easier than replacing each individual panel. I love to see cars like this being saved from certain death, done a few myself , keep at it it's worth it.

Paul rang today with an update. The outer sills were not brilliant so I got new 'un's from Expressed Panels (I must be paying their mortgage)

http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/IMAG0014.jpg?t=1258751993
Paul has been waiting for these before final welding of the transplanted section and most of his time has been checking and double checking measurements, making sure everything is dead on.
While waiting for the sills, he has given attention to the rear arches and the photos took me into a depressed state.

http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/IMAG0016.jpg?t=1258752087
He has already replaced some of the worst sections but we need new inner/outer arches etc
There was an extraordinary amount of filler on the rear quarter (under the RS2000 logo) and when wire brushed off, revealed previous damage which had been hammered out with a pick axe, I reckon.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/IMAG0021.jpg?t=1258752728
Taking the cost of the car, panels (so far) and the labour up to date, I am thinking I could have bought something a lot better condition but I am past the point of no return now so I guess I'm in for the long haul.
Paul is hoping to put in a couple more days next week and I will post more pics when he sends them.

donnt worry mate we all get the rs blues from time to time especially at this stage when you think your only going backwards ,once the new metal is in you'll have turned the corner
Keep going...... we all have the blues. When you feel like there is no end and the parts / cost, just keep going up....Look at other people cars and that they are near the end. You say to your self, it can be done...If i build another one it would be a mint car with all the right parts, instead of the hunting and messing and would proably work out cheaper......

Wow i thought my arches were the worst on here !! :D.
Sills look good, they`ll look nice on the car and once you see them welded on with new arches on its all worth it.
I can`t even get my welding started yet . just keep standing in the garage staring at a pile of panels

I can't tell you how much pleasure it gives me and others to see you persevering with a car in the condition you bought it, by working so hard to bring it back to it's former splendour. Anybody with the right money can splash out on a real minter but anyone doing their level best doing what you're doing deserves a lot of respect and admiration. Also a lot of us spend much more money than we wanted on doing these cars up, just can take a little longer to save up, but it's worth it in the end because you've really made it yours and you've finished it to your standard.
Hopefully we will see it finished one day looking immaculate once again and we can then remember the story behind it that brought it back to life.
Keep on going your doing just great.:D

You know, Tim, I am so glad that I found this site so soon after starting this project. You guys are such a pickmeup when things are not going so well and the amount of technical expertise and plain bloody eagerness to help from you all is staggering. Thanks everyone.
As I said before, its my mate Paul who is the hero of the hour. Its frustrating being 250 miles apart as I have to rely on emailed photos and phone calls for updates. He is coming down on Friday to collect some more bits and I am hoping that he will tell me that he has found the time this week to re-attach the front end panels. We will be discussing the labour costs so far and working out a plan of action to tackle the rear end.
I'm amazed that I've found the cash to get as far as we have, bearing in mind that we are also in the middle of a major refurb of the house :dizzy: - all credit to my long suffering wife who just rolls her eyes each time the credit card bill drops on the mat....
When I get more photos - then you will get more photos!
Thanks again guys.
good effort :salute:
my fav a white broadstripe  it'll all be worth it when your done and unless your spending silly money to buy one, they all will need a bit of work so in some ways your better off doing it all on a rough one as at the end of it all you'll KNOW all the rots been banished :D
Good luck with it :salute:

Glad you're finding the site useful, there are some great mates on here to encourage and help out.......most times there's somebody who knows something about what you want know!
I know Paul is doing the practical work but you must take some credit yourself as you are in the driving seat here! It was you who bought the car, you that had the vision deciding you could do something with it and you are responsible for getting it restored back to life.....without you it could of ended up just as a donor car or on the scrapheap!
I look at the pictures on here of the remarkable work being done and sometimes feel I have missed out not tackling the bodywork when restoring my car, but I had enough work with stripping the car down then getting the mechanical bits sorted, and I know that without it taking me a lot of time along with having to learn as I go, I could not have fitted a new front, made repairs and resprayed the whole car in anything like the time a professional could do it....I did not have that sort of time to spend on it and I just wanted to get it done so I could start enjoying it.
You're doing fine.....roll on the next pics!:)

Well, its been a long time coming, my man Paul has been hampered by a busy work schedule and working on his own house, but the Money Pit is back on the agenda and he has sent me these pics today. They show the front end now re-attached to the replacement bulkhead, new inner wing and wing top repair on the other side. New pan and supports for the nearside for a "proper job". Look for yourself, but to say I am chuffed with Paul's workmanship is a huge understatement.

Yes, very funny :hahaha:
Actually - that decision was on the cards right up until the day he started it, but was rejected for two reasons:
1. I couldn't bear seeing those front wings being cut into - they were the best panels on the whole car
2.Them X-pack arches wouldn't last 5 minutes in Tesco's car park

He talks about the work like its no particular bother at all - I just know it would have been too big a job for me so I'm sooooo glad its in his hands. He says he has a couple of days next week to spend on all the fiddly bits that needs doing on her bottom
After that, it will be the spot welder to join all the flappy bits together again - the shell could be back in the Oldbloke's garage very soon!
Mr BadNews: your gloating gets on my t*ts :D
Well - a third of my shell is now Aussie...but I didn't have to worry about scary microbes jumping out and assaulting MY personal bits :eek: I think you should build a log cabin on your ranch and offer all us guys free holidays ;)

It came back home again late October (courtesy of Kev - thanks again, mate)

and now my life, and my garage is sorted enough to begin the build up. Gonna start with stripping all the paint to uncover any more nasties (can there BE any more?) Front and rear panels first so I can get it back on the rollover frame.

Isn't it amazing how you can set aside a whole weekend to get out in the garage - and then a load of cr*p stuff comes along to stop you doing it
Now I'm away next weekend -so that's another week gone
Anyway, I grabbed a couple of hours and this is the story so far....

Well, here we are 6 months on. The poor old girl has been stored outside and, unfortunately, before I got the chance to get some primer on it. So the bare metal looks kind of sad.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/Back.jpg
So I spent today with a new wire brush and things are looking a bit better now.

Well, I actually found some time to escape into the garage to spend a little quality time with my pride and joy. ;)
Managed to get a little primer on the bits I had already stripped

http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2612.jpg
Turned my attention to the wing first.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2605.jpg
Came up not too bad. There are some ingrained rust spots that will need closer attention with a spot blaster before primer.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2609.jpg
Just fancied doing the rear wing next.

Really pleased with the metalwork underneath here - just a spot of filler to be removed.

Time for another update. The weekend's been a mixture of fortunes...
Got some more stripping done
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2678.jpg

http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2672.jpg
The door skin doesn't look too bad - just a bit of scab at the bottom. But the frame's not in too good shape - an old repair and a fair bit of grot. (I feel one of Expressed's repair sections coming on....)
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2675.jpg
But who would do this:
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2674.jpg
As reported elsewhere, I wanted to get the shell back up into the rollover jig but, sadly, it came off its stands and landed on the front valance.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2658.jpg
I think the front panel will have to come off for that one
Still - its now on the frame and the decks cleared for the next stage.
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp219/amberwood99/bb%20pictures/DSCF2656.jpg
Chris, have got to say, but this photo is a little concerning about the welding (similar to the arches in your previous post) ........ just saying the panel should be continually welded and ground down, not just "tacked" in place ............. not doubting your welding buddy meant good, but this just aint right, sorry :( .........the car will flex and eventually pop the welds and filler ..........
as you've said before, do it once and do it properly

Hi Graham
Yes, I totally agree with you. This weekend has allowed me to get up close and scrutinise what I have here and I realise that there is more to do. Paul has made an astounding job of replacing the floorpan/bulkhead section as he has the inner wings etc. All these panels were "unstiched" and then re spot welded along the original seams and I don't have a problem with any of that.
The rear section is a slightly different story. Yes, the arches, wells and rear panel definately need redoing. Paul is a fabricator/welder, not a motor engineer and maybe didn't realise the implications of "tacking" and the MOT law :dontknow:
I will continue to concentrate on paint stripping and priming the rest of the shell for now and address these issues later.
One thing came out of all this (Taffr dropped this back into my mind) - I'm now reconsidering an X Pack kit  Not to short cut the work that needs doing - its more that my original theories for NOT doing it have changed recently............
Lots of work there Chris, but good things come to those who wait matey. Keep at it. I know how you are feeling mate
