Are many people on here a member? as I see you need to be one to access the site. As someone who would like to purchase an mk1/2 escort in the future, is it worth joining now? Basically are there many cars for sale on the foum? lol

as above, very few cars being sold by members on there.
Most are links from ebay.
Good idea if you want to join to get info on a specific car for sale if it has been registered with the club.
Lots of model info on there and people always willing to help.
But if you want a mk2 then this is place to be.

I was in the AVO club for about 10 years from the late 1980's upwards and they used to have a good mag with lots of cars for sale in it . Mind you that was before they all rusted away and before the internet/ebay etc was about .

It's that £35 quid that keeps the clubs afloat. If everyone had that attitude then there would be no AVO or RSOC for us to be part of. It really should be the "Being a part of it" rather than the selfish "What do I get out of it" like it used to be. :(

could have just made some parts of the forum closed to non members and kept people going on the site with the good chance of them joining ,like some other clubs have done. to be not even told about what was going to happen was a very odd decision and was a snub to non members and not very inviting to trying to get them to join!

The forum is one of the benefits of being a member of AVO. I agree with it being members only. Too many freeloaders around these days. Why should joe public have the same access to all their cars/parts for sale, Technical information/expertise etc???
Surely being a member of the club should entitle you to these benefits and not everybody.

so should the RSOC adopt the same thing with their BB

Has been discussed. ;) The RSOC board has far too much info on display for non members to see at their will. Non-Members should only be allowed to view the main message board with all the technical info etc only available to members. The Full BB should be a perk of being a Full member of the club.

RUDDY
12-07-2009, 12:51
Lets be honest, with what this BB offers, you don't really need the other two boards.

I occasionally check the RSOC BB but got to say it is a very imature site, I think the latest mod with the scribble at the top only increases the drivel. I would lock it to members only full stop.

Used to be in the AVO club, found its mag's interesting reads if somewhat thin. BB was decent I would say .

Afraid my membership of RSOC lapsed at the start of this month, first time I haven't had a club mag through the door in over 20 years and I'm struggling :(:o

TR7 BB is shite :D

I wasn't going to bother replying, but here goes.

To answer the original question of joining the AVO club to see what cars are for sale.
My advice would be to either ring or email the model registrar of the particular car you would be interested in owning.
Their contact info is available to non members on the website.
Member or not you will get friendly advice & pointed in the direction of any cars for sale.
If there isn't anything that is of interest at that moment in time, the registrars will keep a note of your number & ring you back should a car come up for sale.

Then after you have purhased your car there is still no obligation for you to become a member.
That is entirley up to you as an Idividual.

I'll be totally honest & say that I thought the AVO club didn't have anything to offer me at times & didn't necessarily agree with descisions of the committee.

As for non members expecting something from the club, you will get all the help & advice you need from the committee, but you will not get a free message board, I wasn't a member at the time the board went members only.
The reason I renewed was I felt I had something to offer other members & felt a position on the committee would also give me a chance to put some of my knowledge & experience of Mk1 Escorts to good use.
As part of my role with in the club I'm also a moderator on the AVO message board, which I'd say is as busy now as it has ever been.
As a Moderator I'd have to say the most that usually needs doing is moving posts to the correct section on the board.
All the posts that used to cause hassle usually came from the non members who seemed to give the members & committee a hard time.

I'd say 80% of the AVO committee are visitors to this forum & I guess 50% are regular posters on here.
So yes there is a lot of info available here, but the AVO message board is obviously Mk1 specific.

I joined the AVO Club recently since I'm wanting to return to Mk1 ownership and wanted to be able to benefit from an organisation that even Ford of Britain acknowledges to be a leading authority on these cars.

Since I joined, its members and registrars have been friendly and immensely supportive in answering the barrage of questions I've had and providing information on cars I've been interested in where possible, especially when it comes to that thorny question of originality.

Rallyman72

I've been a member for about 14 years now, club is very different now compared to a few years ago. I find it a lot more friendly now and the wealth of knowledge and skills is immense.

they are a great bunch of guys these days prepared to muck in and help each other even to the point of helping with the physical work in a rebuild - my belief is that the membership fee of £25 is good value especially compared to other single marque clubs.

When I sold my Mexico I only advertised it on the AVO board, as I felt there was more chance of it going to someone who would finish it, and I wouldn't end up seeing it being broken on e-bay a few weeks later.

I've seen a couple of cars only advertised on the AVO board, and plenty of spares too.

There's also the club spares as well, which can work out much cheaper for members (centre consoles being a good example).

Are many people on here a member? as I see you need to be one to access the site. As someone who would like to purchase an mk1/2 escort in the future, is it worth joining now? Basically are there many cars for sale on the foum? lol

Yes, imo it's the number one club to be a member of if you have an AVO car or are interested in buying one (that's why it's called the AVO CLUB OWNERS CLUB).

For the record, for the people asking, if you have something different to an AVO car, the clue is in the name of the club... i.e the Golf GTi club doesn't have many Wartburg Knight owners in the club! That said, we welcome anyone with any car as Associate members - Even Wartburgs!

Regarding the closed to members message board (yawn!). The thing is, you can please some of the people some of the time but never all of the people all of the time, so the AVO committee decided to try and please the ones who pay to keep the club going - it's members. (that was at the end of 2007 btw!)

We also have a members only policy on club spares too and that got a few complaints - hey ho!

One last point. If all you require from a club is a good message board, and you want to save money, there are several very good free ones to use, this one is the best by far... ;)

The sad thing is that without any clubs revenue you can not put on shows and therefore you can not find cars, buy parts enjoy the day etc.

If you do not want to be part of a club then fine, do your own thing.

The best gathering of MK1 and Mk2 Escorts I ever see is at AVO National Day and RSOC meets.

I applaud this site for running with no membership revenue but the second you put on shows and print magazines etc you need money because the costs hit you hard.

The AVO Club is a great club if you join you will see, but to sum up and I know it has been said and is cheesy, but "you only get out what you put in"

I hope everyone that uses this site reflects on the efforts it takes and hope that when you stop moaning you think about how much you are a minority. I would gladly pay to use this site and the rewards of being a member of the AVO site are very good. (Cheap parts etc)

Nothing so large as a computer to hide behind:rolleyes:

It seems pretty simple to me . As some people on here were booted off the AVO club forum without warning it's just got their backs up a bit . I can see their point as it's a bit rude , perhaps the AVO club should have sent out a message to non-members before doing that instead of just doing it . I'm sure that they would have received much better press elsewhere if they had used some manners in the first place . :)

I’m an AVO member on the other side of the world (well I will be again when they get around to processing my renewal) and have only managed to get to a couple of AVO national days but have always found all the guys there more than helpful and very friendly.

From my experience of clubs and voluntary organisations in general it is mostly a thankless job and I’m sure this applies to the AVO committee as well.

Perhaps the change in policy about the forum wasn’t handled as well as it could have been but the answer is simple - build a bridge and get over it. Life is too short and there are more important things to worry about.

If you’re into Mk 1 RS Escorts then it’s a great club to belong to.

its £35 quid to join which i would rather put in a one armed bandit at least i might get something back:p

come on what do you get for your £35:confused:

1- website (for members only) with lots of advice, needs cash to run
2- avo national day (which has to be paid for) for its members
3- national day which has to be organised and most of the members it not all give up thier valuable FREE time to put on a great show for you
4- active members sorting out stands at shows (all year round) for its members
6- club spares to help the members out with thier cars, making hard to get bits
7-club mag for its members?? not sure if they do still have one but that would need cash to produce and members free time again to make it happen
8-............................ any more

i'm not an avo member or an avo fan but there are a good few on here that are, they give up thier own free time and sometimes money out of thier own pocket to run the club, petrol money and paying for tickets so on,

so really £35 is an absolute rip off and you get **** all back for it!!!!

no i don't think so, its a fair deal, £35 for all that

Same as the RSOC Shame some people don't realise this. If they were prepared to contribute to the running of a club then they might think twice before bleeting like a spoilt child.

But it isn't £35 - it is £25 annual subscription.

For Christ sake do you lot listen (it seems you cannot read) :)

QUARTERLY!!!how do i join?i`ve changed my mind:D

look it was simple...they could have given none members some notice or they could have made some of the site members only like the for sale and spares etc.that way mr public can go on the site and if he likes what he sees join.making the whole site private does not encourage new members as they get to see nothing other details how to slash out £30.easy really thats how the lotus cortina forum works.

as for this being a boring topic check out the replies and views.

i love you all really:camp:

It seems pretty simple to me . As some people on here were booted off the AVO club forum without warning it's just got their backs up a bit . I can see their point as it's a bit rude , perhaps the AVO club should have sent out a message to non-members before doing that instead of just doing it . I'm sure that they would have received much better press elsewhere if they had used some manners in the first place . :)

that's all that needed to be done, but they took the boot them out without warning route. odd

So, let me get this straight. As well as orgnanising the local shows, sorting an excellent national day with lots of guest clubs and groups and of course the special guests and traders (we even make sure the sun shines!), getting in articals and editing the magazine, buying the spares, selling the spares, writing to all the members, writing to all the popular classic car magazines, looking after the website, sorting the club accounts, making sure the Companies House returns, MSA fees, FBHVC fees etc. are all on time, driving hundreds of miles each year to meetings, sitting at said meetings and discussing how best to move the club forward, dealing with members phone calls, sorting membership renewals, enroling new members, plus many more mundane tasks we perform for the good of the club and its members - all freely given with no financial gain whatsoever - you also expect us to have good manners and inform people who aren't even in the club what we intend to do on our members website, just to keep them happy?

My God, you non-members don't expect much of a club you prefer not to join do you?

Give notice? Yeah right, and you would have just said "Oh thanks for letting us know, that's very well mannered of you chaps, carry on!" wouldn't you?

There is plenty of access on the website for non-members, in fact non-members have access to ALL of it! It's only the forum that's members only, so I really can't see your point (unless you just want to use the site for your own needs and then laugh at the club for letting you get it for free - like several people did!)

As for not encouraging new members (as previously stated): Membership applications actually went up once the forum went members only - so again, I can't see your point.

The thing is guys, you seem to believe the club and its committee should be accountable to and run the club how people who aren't members, who don't contribute one penny piece to the upkeep of the club, feel it should be run... OK, I'll try not to be rude but to be blunt:

THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS, SO GET OVER IT!

Good manners from an organised club is paramount . Just booting people off a forum without warning or without a notice posted on the website is dam right rude . It would have took 2mins to post up a thread saying that after a certain date all non-paying website members would be exculded . Simple , quick and yet polite . ;)

I think that the AVO OC is a great club...

Run by members...for members and run very well.

£30 for initial membership is a bargain.

So much real helpful advice, physical help when you need it and a great bunch of real like minded people.
