View Full Version : It is with regret......My Early MK2 RS2000...
.....has been ignored and is in need of some TLC :p (No, nay never, no nay never for sale :o )
I have owned OJX now for about 13 years and have had some tremendous satisfaction from her going regularly on Classic Ford tours to Europe. I have clocked up 24 thousand since I bought her and now, ashamed by so many stunning engine bays this year and the fact I have kinda put my MK2 to one-side since getting my MK1 Escort, I have decided to give the engine, the engine bay and some of the bodywork a birthday :)
Made a start today.......took a small piece out of the bulkhead pad  , and took some ancilliary bits off.
The engine will be coming out tomorrow.
It is amazingly solid.....the worst bits are the battery tray (NOS one ready to fit) and the servo needs spraying / powder-coating (any suggestions which is best?)
It would probably have got by with a good clean-up but the bay will be sprayed soon. The underneath of the car is undersealed and that's how it will stay otherwise I will be too scared to drive it !
Be prepared for loads of questions as this is the first time I have done this kind of thing at the ripe old age of 42  :o I will ask questions and if I remember I will put them in Carnival Red text
A request from Oldskooljoe, some pics below.

good luck al, best colour,
doesnt look bad in there, hope youre not going to cut the new battery tray,
wouldnt powdercoat the servo, the process will melt the rubber internals
Hi Aled
i am doing my engine bay too got the bay clear at the mo
replacing inner/outer wings (not me doing that bit) but found a few more holes where there should be none:(
I agree with you i could not open my bonnet this year:o
too many nice motors about lol

Ta Dave.... spray it is then. I was offered twin carbs when I bought the car 13 years ago, but turned them down. I had spent my budget of just over £3k on the car as it was   The new battery tray will not be cut this time unlike 13 yrs ago.

The engine does not need a rebuild. As you know from the European tours we do, the engine is sweet as a nut. It was rebuilt 21 k ago (verified) when I bought it in 1995. I am putting new buits on it, consisting of new Clutch assembly....water pump, + fuel pump.
As well as that, the head will be convereted to unleaded, as putting in lead-additive is a chore :o The 200 block is in good nick
Servo was sprayed and looks a lot better.....brake pipes ordered, as well as master-cylinder seals :) A few pics below:

Very well done, I don't know if you ever found out what the relais and patching cable were for?
Well the early ones had an alternator with an external reg, the little Bosch (Ford stamped) reg, was once attached via the cable to the alternator.
If you check Jaffa's Return, you'll see in there somewhere that Dasa got an NOS reg, and replaced the Bosch stamped cover on his for the original Ford stamped cover on the one he took off his.
Looking very nice aled

Thanks for the above.....I eventually found out it was a voltage regulator for the alternator as you say. Very intersesting to see the differences in the early cars. I have re-furbed and re-fitted the regulator and may just tie the lead in place. Will look more closely at Jaffa now. Thanks for info ;)
Did a bit more yesterday and today. Timing belt, cover, radiator, some hoses, and just generally dressing it up. Waiting for top and bottom hoses and engine lift eyes off flea bay, and still awaiting the master cylinder.
Does anyone know where I can get some heater hoses from please....I don't want the shiny Samco type hose, just standard?

The part holding the job up was the exhaust. I initially had a Janspeed manifold and system on the car, so since I have gone to standard manifold and downpipe I was hunting around for a standard system to prevent butchering the Janspeed system up :o
Change of plan  .....Dale got his angle grinder and welder out today and did a great job. He welded the Janspeed system to the downpipe and cut out the middle box and welded in a straight pipe.

Also done this afternoon was fit the cables to the pedal box, fill up with water, and put brake fluid in. I was a bit aprehensive about this with visions of brake fluid squirting all over the new paint. Alas, all went well :o:)
The start-up will be tomorrow, so watch this space:rolleyes: Dale is confident, but I am not :o:)

the janspeed joins upto a std manifold anyway aled ???
home made exhaust systems are the best anyway ;)
the janspeed joins upto a std manifold anyway aled ???
It's the flange that was the problem and as the last 1/4 inch of the downpipe was see-through , it was cut off and the Janspeed was connected via with a bracket. It was the other end which was welded to eliminate the middle box.

I know Taffr is a strong supporter of one box systems as he has told me to hack mine off too!.......might be tempted as it sounds too "stainless" at the moment!
Well.....what a day of high and lows
The car started after a couple of turns:D, but the exhaust downpipe blew a little so took it off and Dale got his welder out again :)
Then, the engine would not start.....there was no spark :crybaby:
It transpired the dizzy had developed a problem whereby the points were not lying correctly due to some flexing in the plate beneath it. Some pressure placed on the right hand side of the points with a screwdriver would allow a spark
Changed the dizzy for a spare and all was well :jumpy: If anyone has a nice spare dizzy, please let me know
A couple of vids below off my camera: It sounds like a tractor in the vid, but its not as bad as that ! The rasp from the exhaust now the centre box is removed is a lot sweeter :salute: (P.S.....The plug leads have been tidied up now !)

With the kind permission of Oggie, I will now be able to bring it to the Lakes, not for the tour as such, but to join the Sunday display
The manifold powder-coating was smoking a month ago when I drove the short distance to the paint shop, but today it wasn't too bad but it has scorched a little but I don't think I will have time to change that and spray it.
It drove lovely today, first time since the engine went back in:D
It now leaves me tomorrow to polish it up, fit side decals, put mudflaps on, change bulkhead pad, fit front 175/70's and other bits and bobs.

The bit I was unhappy with has been fixed......I had skimped a little on the carburettor, and just cleaned it up due to a lack of funds.
I collected a 38 DGAS at the AVO day and today I fitted it.....it makes such a difference
