only if you have the first owner's name and address or the Fahrzeugbrief.

As you may or may not know, in Germany every time a car is registered or re-registered (even if the car is "abgemeldet"/SORN i.e. laid up for 6 months) even by the same person, the car gets a new reg no and set of plates.

Yes it was an Ex-squaddies car, sadly I don't have any names, the only one I have is a Bert Flowers from Kent, he is the one who bought it into the UK, so I am guessing he was the squaddie.

may well have been registered AW - xxx then?

You could always ask Zakspeed if they have any record of your VIN and documentation on the sale and reg. no I suppose.

Most obvious is of course chatting to the person that imported it.

I don't know of a service like the one DVLA do, with all the old documents, the changes of plate and owner are documented on the Fahrzeugbrief (V5) here which is only replaced when there is no space left on the document to record and new owner or registration process.

I have tried zakspeed but no reply, even had a couple of german ford peeps (oldtimers) trying to trace the VIN for me but no luck there either.

Also tried looking for Bert flowers but came up a blank there.

are zakspeed still going ? I was told in the 80's they were a new Ford dealer, hence my car was bought by them.. unless it was some sort of demo car, hence the strange non std colour ?

The Zakspeed racing team is still going but Peter Zakowski put in for private bankruptcy in 2006, so I assume the car business went breasts up too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zakspeed

If a car's been exported I assume all records have deleted anyway, the only way to find out then is through finding someone who bought it new or s/hand I suppose.

Maybe it has been bought out. Like so many garages in this area, have been taken over, changed name and moved to new premises. So much has changed in the motor trade over the last 30 years. They have also swaped their franchises to confuse things even further.

Any idea if UBM Motors(Ford) Ltd come into it anywhere, they where the RS Dealers in that area at that time?

Don't you believe it John! I was amazed when I wrote to the first owner of mine about 18 months ago now. I thought the guy would have been getting on a bit or even passed away, but he is still there and was amazed and grateful that I had got in touch. He also wants to come over to see the car some time and bring some old photos of the car with him. To my surprise he was 39 years old, so he was in his early 20's when he bought the car new, lucky guy!

A good bit of research here John. Interesting to see how the dealers had changed in comparison to the older list. So it looks like UBM Motors were taken over or replaced by Godfreys in Cardiff, so Godfreys would have supplied the car new, and that is probably the way you want to go. Earl of Chippenham Ltd could have bought the car second hand and sold it to a later owner.

When I bought my first RS in 1979 from City Speed in Gloucester it was only 14 months old and one owner. On the number plates it had "RF Tilley Autos", which suggested they sold the car when new, but as far as I know they were not ever RS Dealers. It had a XPA plate which means a Guildford registration, and could have been supplied firstly by A Gray & Co Ltd located there, so this type of thing went on a bit! I never found out who RF Tilley were!

I'm sure in the rwd Escort period quite a lot of RS cars were sold by ordinary Ford dealers, not RS dealers. What I'm not sure about is whether they all had to come via an RS dealer to the selling dealer ie. whether Ford would ever release RS cars direct to a non-RS Ford dealer. The cases I know of all involved the non-RS Ford dealer sourcing the car from an RS dealer.
Ford was the most protective of any UK manufacturer/importer of its dealers in some respects. It was a major struggle to get Ford to sell large volumes of vehicles direct to even the largest Government departments (other than in wartime). Their first negotiating stance was always to demand they supplied via a dealer. To win tenders they obviously had to give the dealer they nominated in their response extra discount - and large purchasers usually eventually negotiated the dealer out of the link but it was interesting just how hard Ford tried to keep them in it. No other vehicle supplier was like Ford in that respect.
Conversely Ford had a reputation of treating their smaller dealers like sh*t in their normal relationships...

I was selling new cars for a BL Distributor in the 70's and we took delivery of our small dealers cars, and then they would collect them from us.

I would think all new RS cars were delivered to the RS dealers first, then were distributed to the non-RS Dealer as the RS dealers would want to keep in control of the supply, or else they might as well all be RS dealers! I would also agree that the RS dealers were protective, and they I could see them not being all that generous to give away their cherished RS's. They would have a waiting list of customers of their own for a fairly small supply of RS's especially when first released, and would see them as for making good profit for themselves, not having to discount them much. Models of mainstream Fords were not all that freely available then, as I ordered a Venetian Red Escort Popular Plus in 1979, and it took 6 weeks to arrive!

In general many of these small dealers could end up with their distributors choice, being models that no-one else wanted, crap colours, small engine sizes, basic trim models, obselete models etc.
