Dave, what do you do for a living? or is graphic design your living?
as the work you have done so far is AWESOME !!!!
Next it will have to be a Droop snoot version Proper RS2 ?
Brian
Hi Brian !
Well ... It is difficult to explain exactly what I do. I don't do graphics for a living. It has been a hobby ever since owning my Amiga computer.
I started out working as a mechanic in my old boy's garage about 15 years ago, then after about 4 years I left to go back to Uni. I studied Mathematics with Engineering.
Now I work in Switzerland for the Swiss National company doing research into the feasibility and implementation of Nuclear Waste disposal ! See http://www.nagra.ch and http://www.grimsel.com (I created that site).
Occasionally do some graphics and animations/DVDs for them, mostly programming, Database work, IT support, web stuff etc., etc. Big change from being a mechanic !! :D
It's great to see so much interest and support in the old Mk1 and 2 escorts in the UK ! I have NEVER seen any here - their MOTs are a NIGHTMARE. And they all love their German and Italian cars.
But I still know a few Brits who have interesting stuff (Land-Rover, Westfield, Morgans) and get my hands dirty now and again.
I had a MK1 1300E a long time ago and finally bought a MK1 RS2000 this summer :D A dream come true. I'm going to bring it out and play on the mountain passes with them :bad-boy: Oh .. YES !! :D

Wow, thanks for the feedback guys !
I'm working on the rear now.
Here's a question for all you MK2 Ghurus :
It seems that the earlier Mexicos used a rear bumper with small quarters, while later Mexs and RS2000s seemed to use longer quarters on the rear bumpers ? Is that right ?
Here are a few more images ...

Dave How far do you want to go with detail on the 2k ?
This is the best post ever put on this board. :thumbright:
to see a mk2 as straight as these ones is unbelievable, some of the colours i didn`t really like before but when the car is so straight they actually look great.

ps any chance of a signal amber rs2 with a black vinyl roof
cheeRS Ders.
I spent 10 years in the CAD industry so I know what went into these drawings, bloody brilliant !
Wow ! Thanks guys :)
Kel : I need to work on the interior now. And then some arches, probably forrest to begin with - maybe X-pack later. After that I don't know how far to go. I am sourcing a top Printer at the moment and have been testing many methods of printing for making a Poster of my MK1. Perhaps I'll also offer the MK2 for sale as a poster too, if there is enough interest ?
It is just a hobby but it forces me to be accurate by asking you guys and other MK2 owners for opinions. I also post in a Copmuter Graphics Art forum, but most are more interested in Porshces and "Gee Whizz" things. I'd rather get it reviewed by people who enjoy RSs. As I said with my Mk1 - if it can pass the test with the owners and fans - It'll pass ANYWHERE.
Why do you ask ?
Here are 2 more colours - White and the Signal Red 79 (amber ?) :

Dave - the scuttle panel (in front of the windscreen) is wrong, should be slatted. Not trying to critisize your work mate, just something to think about if you are going for posters etc.
cheeRS Ders.
And if we are being super critical, the rear quarter window is just too angular going into the C pillar.
But ... but ... you just have to think ... Ford did not have this design capability when they orginally designed the Mk2.
These pics are the best ... out of this world. Keep it going.
Ian
reason I asked Dave, is if you want to get it spot on there are few additions to be made.
-Driver side remote mirror
-Stripe need to be 1/2 inch from the body swage line
- there is a swage line on the bonnet & Nosecone
there are other but I know some of the Turbo sport guys have highlighted them.

-Driver side remote mirror
Did ALL RS2000s have these ?
-Stripe need to be 1/2 inch from the body swage line
Yup, will do - I'll just move mine down a bit
- there is a swage line on the bonnet & Nosecone
Yes, I know about the slight swage at the beginning of the bonnet, but where is the swage on the nosecone ??
I added the windscreen scuttle, then took a break from the exterior to model the interior :)
Some fishnet recaros. Bear in mind that 80% of these will be hidden so I didn't add all the screws/reclining mecahnisms etc ... ;)

Dave_3d you are a legend! Are you sure this is your hobby? Keep up the good work. I've seen some other work like this here in OZ, but not to this standard. Good on ya!
Can I put in an order for the Rothmans MK2 RS1800 rally car? It should be a nice challenge for you.
Thanks guys ...
Yup, there was a small compositing mistake by myself on the windows. I've adjusted that.
Below is an update, full size. It highlights the poor quality of the little digital camera I borrowed. I have had to add digital noise to my 3d render !
The main problem is that the interior is partly stripped at the moment - the doors are just hollow and no rear parcel shelf means you can see directly into the boot. When they are added it'll look much better ! So think of it with a stripped out interior.

Dave
go for it then! I'd like to see the results. How long does it take to do these renderings? I guess with the right computer, not long?
Hi Wombat,
With my Twin Xeon Processor PC it can crunch through a test frame in about 10 minutes .. and a render at about 2000x1500 takes about 30 minutes.
When I max all the settings it can take many hours - on my laptop it took about 9.5 hours to render my MK1 at hi-res. But at that quality it prints better than any photograph :) - so just start it running and it'll be finished when you come back from the pub ;)
Here is a shot I did last night that I left running on my PC, nice close up to show the detail and new Minilites :

Dave,
Your rendering is simply stunning.....it has to be said (and it has!). I like the close up of the red Mex by far the best.
Dare I....I said, dare I.....offer a very little constructive......och, here goes - The tyres on the close up shot almost look like a hard plastic/rubber to me than a soft rubber. Not sure what it is...the reflectivity, new tyre with no hairy bits, too flat....I dunno.
Again, stunning, stunning realism....PLEASE KEEP IT UP!
PS. Do you have a TIF or BMP of the Red mex close up....would love to print it out 1440dpi and put on the wall!
PPS. Have you ever tried motorcycles?......I used to know this guy who did some trials motorcycles rendering for me.
Ian.
Thanks for the crits Ian.
I have always been playing with the rubber tyre settings. But this along with some other crits made me sit down and adjust the tyre settings.
Technical bit : I added a shader that keeps the specular levels (shiny white glare parts) on the side wall but faded it into a dull flat, lighter material colour on the tyre tread. I also added a fractal smooth noise modifier to the specular channel meaning the shine is subtley varied across the side wall. Simulating the slightly undulating surface - it is not perfectly smooth. All very subtle, hopefully not noticeable - only that it looks better :happy3:
Any way the result :

dave_3d......the tyres definitely look like rubber now.....subtle differences from before, but it's made all the difference.....you got real rubber there now.... :)
