View Full Version : Fitting Rear Seat Belts......

Hopefully some of you knowledgable gents out there can help me!?

Bought a set of rear belts off Darran, which came OUT of a Mk2..however, it seems to be beyond my technical abilities to get them back in mine!

Can anybody give me a steer in words of one syllable, or pictures would be great!!

Particularly :

* I have the rear seats out already, and can see that there are 4 pre-tapped holes available..2 on the transmission tunnel sides, 2 on the flat section of the rear "panel". So looks hopeful.

Which part of the belt equipment goes where? Do the "female" holders bolt to the tunnel, then pop up behind the bottom seat squab?

Does the reel which holds the belt actually sit beneath the seats (when back in place)? ie can't be seen when all is fitted and working?

* At the top end of the belts, I think they need to bolt into the C-pillar. Have removed the trim. There are 3 reasonably sized holes to chose from, but none seem to be pre-tapped. What do I do here?

Obviously, with all this being safety related, and intending that they get used, don't want to do a half baked job on this one.

Your help would be appreciated!

Cheers

Simon

yes female parts ooo er go under the seat and come up from between the back and bottom.

The intertia reel goes on top of the rear panel with 2" metal bars with a thread in the centre in the boot and a big bolt from the parcel shelf down and tightened through this bar

I will post some pics
cant take the seat out to show you as I have only just put them back in will in really nessary :)

Bit surprised here! The rear belts originally were fitted vertically and passed through a hole in the parcel shelf with a little plastic trim framing the slot. It's important to know which type of inertia reel you've got and whether it has to be mounted vertically!

In actual fact on Brian's pic you can see the metal cut out for the belt to pass through. It then goes up to a hoop on the rear C Pillar. Just like any modern car, actually!

I see what you mean dasadrew, but were done like that gods knows when ?

Thanks for referring to me as a god, Brian (as I do know when they were done like that!).

In actual fact, I thought it would be quite easy and original like that, as e.g. the Fiesta rear belts set up can be transferred more or less completely to the Escort (I think!). From an ultimate safety point of view, I'd prefer to be hanging on a 'C' Pillar than a parcel shelf but then I'm a Chunky Monkey!

Like I say, if you've got the type of inertia reels that have to be fitted vertically, then there's not much choice!

The plot thickens then....

I think these need to be mounted vertically then..and now that you've mentioned it, there IS a thin, slotted piece of "trim" attached to the belts. Also, the top of the belt unit is identical to the front seat belt set up (ie the triangular piece which sits just behind the driver's head). So this looks like it would be a good fit on the C-pillar.

However..how do I attach to the C-pilla itself?...the metal is relatively thin, and not thread tapped...?

Don't believe a word of it!! LOL!

About 1/3 the way up the C-Pillar from the rear parcel shelf it has a raised flange and a threaded insert. Covered by black sticky tape under the trim.

Have you looked? :bigsmurf:

Remove C pillar trim and I am sure there is a threaded hole in the pillar !

Perhaps I haven't looked closely enough!
Tried offering up the fitting/bolt to a couple of the holes in the C pillar, but nothing doing!

Sounds like a re-visit tomorrow morning!

Had original lap belts fitted into the rear of mine. Mint and for sale if anybody wants them? Need to change to the 4 point fixing ones as described here. MK2 XR2 ones are perfect if anybody has some?

This is where the hole is:

Just nipped down to the garage (bit wet and miserable out!)..and found the tape circled...lurking beneath, a threaded hole!!

Excellent!

Thanks for everybody's help then..think I'd better try and do something useful tomorrow then..will keep you posted.

You found your hole on the c pillar then!!!!!!!

The belt real, does bolt up on the inner rear 1/4,in the boot as shown and the plastic trim is to finish off the rear parcel shelf once you,ve cut a hole in it,all the holes and fitting are on most mk2 shells.
Banishit has non genuine rear belts by the look of things,as they didnt just bolt off the rear shelf(not very strong),but most kits were done like this at the time.

Hope you work it out

I have carried out the mk2 XR2i Fester rear belt swap as well, just be aware that the reel is mounted to the rear quarter panel as per wiggys pic via the same alloy metal gizzmo with a pin and hole that secures the front reels to the botom of the b pillar.
This gizzmo keeps the orientaion of the real correct and so allows it to spool out under light load but lock tight under heavy load, if you dont get this orientation right it wont work.

Above is loose description of the workings of an "Inertia Reel" seatbelt !

Or imagine a "tilt" mechanism on a Pinball machine

Thanks for all that....

Hopefully this question need never be asked again..it could be archived and pointed to for future reference!!

Bit more info required if poss from the experts out there.......

Got the reel bolted in under the shelf..parcel shelf holes cut OK.."mid point" bolted to C-pillar...

Now what is the correct routing of the "loose end", the 3rd point of the triangle if you like? Obviously it bolts to the floor under the seat squab.

Should it route over the top of the seat back rest, and down through the gap between back rest and seat squab (as it appears to do in Banishit's photos).

Or is there a route I'm missing here?

Cheers..and as usual, much appreciated!

Thats how mine go if that helps

Yes they go over the rear seat back and mount under the seat base.

Cheers!
