As title !
The reason I have moved this thread to main message area is because I feel it is raising issues that can affect many of us
lol @ fast eddie - this thread is not a criticism of you but as you offered an item with a "make me an offer" then you can take the blame for this thread starting seeing as it used to be your ad :p
I know the reasons put forward but I don't agree with this. It pre-supposes everyone knows the value of everything and that simply isn't so. I have all manner of stuff (all non-Escort now) that I have not a clue about value of and the only realistic way of selling on such forums is to invite offers.

its not what the items worth ! its what its worth to you !!! you know what a fair price for a part is and to be honest you know how much you want ! by saying make me an offer is just trying to shaft more money out of someone who does not know its worth ! or maybe really desperate to get that part to finish the car ! just be a good person and cover your costs by all means ! if you want to shaft people then sell on ebay with the rest ! john:cool:

If item sale price is unknown then put it on Ebay for 99p start price and go for it !
That way then Ebay makes a fortune from listing fee and takes a percentage of final sale price
I make fork all from "for sale" ads and I prefer transparency for all users of my website and do not want registered users subject to Make Me An Offer type ads and leave themselves open to possible rip off prices
If a seller wants to chance their arm with a MMAO type sale then it aint gonna happen on here !

Will you please read what was written. Others could take considerable offence at such comments - and I could too at such words.
I repeat: I have at times had not a clue what some Escort items were worth and no way of finding out for many obscure items that rarely appear. That applies to non-Escort items too. Clearly some of you are aware of someone in your circle being unscrupulous. Some at least are not. All I have ever sought through adverts was a fair price - and experience on here was usually good. Every time I have ventured to other Ford forums to advertise I have encountered offensive scum. You all should thus be proud of most of the members here. BUT: the fairest way of contracting both in private business and the public sector is open competitive tendering. That doesn't involve trying to set an open price.
I have no Escort bits left to dispose of - but if I did I wouldn't be able to use this forum under this rule now.

KL - Since I applied the "must have a price" rule I personally feel the Private for sale ads have now become a more transparent market place
No longer are people "chancing" their arm on seeing how much they can screw out of a buyer
If a make me an offer type sale is wanted by a seller then they can put it on Ebay and obviously on there the best offer will win (subject to any reserve)
Private and Trade ads are FREE on here and I do not hear any complaints off sellers regarding my price rule as they have the perfect catchment for MKI and MKII Escort owners and it dont cost them a penny in commission either.
Just take a look at Miniliteman's latest for sale ad - All priced and the majority sold with no issues as far as I could see - Maybe Leon would like to comment on my pricing rule ?
If sellers dont agree with my price rule they can advertise on other sites but many other sites are adopting a similar pricing policy.
Even my local paper doesnt allow "make me an offer" type ads they all need a price unless it is a free to good home type etc
It is the sellers responsibility to have an understanding of the current market value of items and should an item be offered at an inflated rate then I reckon it will still be for sale or of course a buyer may offer a lower price.

I'm a newbie to the scene unlike some of you guys but this why i joined these forums more often than not you get ripped off when buying parts ,so its good that you have sites like this one ,and others like scottish old school were you have like minded people who are out to help each other and offer their surplus parts at reasonable prices so i agree with johny lock, and some of the other comments
Dave,
Whilst I agree with your comments and your stance, I also sympathise with KL who may have parts for sale and does not know their value.
Perhaps an idea would be to add a thread entitled ' WHAT'S IT WORTH ?' or 'PRICE GUIDE' . If this was placed, non-interested parties could give an unbiased opinion of the items value, helping the seller and buyer alike.

i think the price rule is a good thing.....i have always put i nice big list of parts with a price beside it and that give the buyer opportunity buy or not to buy...most of my stuff sells on here and what don't sell then goes on ebay to sell for what ever it sells for and even then i start all my items at £1 so the buyer can pay as much as he or she likes
the only time i set a price is on the big items that i have paid alot of money for
keep this rule dave it's a good thing :)

I have no problem with that but I will not allow threads/posts such as :-
I have a wheel for sale and I may want to sell it and was wondering how much it is worth etc etc etc
That to me reads - I have a wheel and if some muppet wants to pm and offer me a small fortune for it then I will sell it - If I get offered not as much as I want then it is not for sale.

That would clearly defeat the object....hopefully they will have more sense.
The seller should get a rough guide to its current value, and then advertise it on the other thread with the price. Winner:slurp:

I would prefer a "locked" thread managed by a suitable person
They can make serious price judgements on various items
If someone wants a price on an unlisted item they cam pm the person and they can then edit the locked thread to include said item
Anyone want the role ?
But be prepared for criticism such as "your way out - too cheap too dear blah blah"

i always mark my prices on what it would cost to by from fords today on another car like the ford focas
a new mk2 escort light is worth about £75 these days but if you go to ford and wanted to buy a new focas rear light i bet it will cost over £150
that makes the mk2 escort cheap ;)
this works for all parts to me
but i still offer cheap parts and some free parts to other members on this BB ;) :D and i'm happy to help anyone out if i can :salute:
dave, your right folks hipe the prices because they know we need items to keep cars on the road , you all have seen it a 50p item fetching £40.00, ON EBAY,its spoiling the fun of keeping old school cars.
this is what makes a top site, people with a genuine interest helping wannabys like me,my biggest pet hate is when people put on ebay "may withdraw as advertised elsewhere"but get cranky when you ask what its advertised for saying just make a bid i wont give my reserve,if its advertised you know what price you want.dont mean to sound like a school teacher but this is a sound rule and much appreciated.class dismissed:rolleyes: .

just thinking about it dave...darran moss will be good for this job as he sells parts all day and his parts are not dear and will give a very good guide for the part being sold...:)

Since you asked Dave ...
First of all I know what KL 's reasoning is; but in similar circumstances (not knowing what a part is worth) I asked (pm) some respected BB-members on here to get a proper market-value of the parts I had for sale. So I think a (locked, don't know exactly how it should work) separate thread section would be a good idea. I always wanted to be a Administrator ... but perhaps Ruddy and/or Robbo would be better for this role.
The parts I had for sale last week were priced to sell; for a set of 4 NOS RS-wheel-centrecaps I asked £80 and they sold within a couple of hours. I do not mind that a similar set on ebay fetched £128 not long afterwards. As long as the buyer doesn't buy them off me to make a profit shortly after buying ...
I suggest that anyone wanting to sell parts for the highest price possible to it on ebay like some Germans do it atm: auction it with a high-buy-it-now-price plus the make-me-an-offer facility.
That way if there's a silly b*st*rd that does buy-it-now you make an excellent price or if not you can look out for buyer making a bid close to your asking price.
I see this BB as a friendly place not as a substitute for ebay. If that all makes any sense ... ;)

if i have parts lying around that i have no intention of using or keeping i would rather sell them cheap to someone to put to good use or to keep a car going ,...are we enthusiasts or not ?? as long as we dont feel "cheated " we all must know what these parts are worth to us !!
