View Full Version : pockets's mk1 resto
heres some pics of what im up to with the mk1 which i started on thursday 13/12/2007.
thanks to a very nice boss im allowed to keep it at my work and work on it after 5:00 so i can get the welding done as long as i keep it mobile!
its going to be an all year round runner for me and fiona and maybe a track car so i want it to be strong and well rust proofed.
its never going to be a show car so theres no point in hiding repairs and im not doing a total strip down etc.
the cars had some pritty shady repairs along its way ie fibre glass found where metal should be, floor pans not welded in properly and wires just twisted together and taped etc  so these are all going to be sorted.

first job...remove seats and carpet and patch drivers floor so i didnt fall through.....NOTE home made 3mm thick box section chassis leg! ( wasnt me! )but its bloody solid!
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0001-1.jpg
this is where i found a huge patch of fibre glass/silicone sealer mix  so cut it all out and fixed that
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0006-1.jpg
n/s floor and inner wing got a going over with a wire wheel on the end of the grinder to remove loads of shite and rust, then covered in cure rust.
the whole floor/chassis will get this treatment as well as a marine type galvanising paint at £24 per 1/2 litre! comes up really well though.

looking good , keep up the good work.......:D
coming toghter nicely, keep going
thanks guys.
the problem is that the cars at my work which is 15 miles away from home and me and the girfriend travel to work together so she has to get a lift home if i stay to work on the car.
time flys in the garage does anyone else find that??? i was in there till 11:30 on friday night with out any dinner
thanks guys.

I don't see that being a problem with the amount of vehicles that the two of you have :dontknow: :dontknow: :D
Looking good by the way David
cheeRS craig!:D
its not the amount of cars we have its just the cost of the fuel!! it all adds up especially with the focus, we can only get fuel in one garage round here for it! lol
at least the mk1's tax free, get that up ye mr government!:thefinger:
:D
ive not been doing much to the mk1 lately apart from adding anti freeze as it had none  ( its been a bit cold up here see pics ) and getting it running again due to annoying electric fuel pump problems.
the pump got removed and thrown across the garage and i replaced it with an original mechanical one on the engine.
im working a couple of days next week so i'll probably get more done then.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0009-1.jpg
i did a bit more to the mk1 today once id dragged myself out the house.
on friday night it wouldnt start so today i checked and cleaned the plugs and points which worked, it now runs.
its got a coolant leak from the hose off the water pump so it was a good excuse to remove the radiator and hoses as the front x member had a crack which needed welded anyway.
as soon as that came out i found more to do as previous weld repairs to the x member arnt fully welded and when some one fitted another front panel they didnt paint/rust proof the back of it so after i finished the welding it got the surface rust sanded off and i painted it with a rust proof marine paint i have ( it wont rust again! http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif ) at that point i got ****ed off with fixing other peoples bad repairs and went home http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif
fixing some one elses bodged repares seems to be the story for this car, cant wait to get to the wiring! http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif
i wasnt planning on painting the car at all but fiona got me thinking and i might paint it a nice bright colour like vista orange, maze yellow, signal green or white to match the mk2.
im also thinking of modena green hmmmm
sorry i didnt take pics, i forgot!

looks nice keep it up :D
finally done a bit more to the mk1.
i found a wee crack in the floor just behind the seat box on the drivers side floor/inner sill area so i had a poke about and spent friday night after work cutting away bad previous repairs trying to get good metal to weld to.
i found 3 layers of floor skins with a few mm of wet rusty dust in between each one and some one fitted a full inner sill repair panel when they didnt need to so most of that got cut out so i can replace the floor properly.
this is how a 3 inch crack ended up like.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0023.jpg
this is how it finished today, took ages to get the panel to fit neatly, involving some big hammers!!
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0017-1.jpg
also found one of brians 8 inch wide weller wheels fitted with a 215 50 13 tyre so i fitted it to see what it would be like
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0019.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0020.jpg
looks quite god with black wheels........hmmmm
Looking good mate, keep the pics coming :)
i had to go into work today and move the mk1 out so i dont get into sh!t tomorrow morning from the boss, i didnt know fiona had video'd me taking it out.
here it is if you'd like to see it.:D

doh! edited, posted twice for some reason!!
looks well in the vid, you cant beat the mk1 shape
i finally managed to drag my a$$ into the garage to do some more work on the old mk1.
as usual what started off as a little hole about 3 inch square got bigger and bigger
im getting sick of finding other peoples shady repairs on this car :violent1:
can you believe the roll cage and seat belt bolts were mounted to an unwelded inner sill/floor panel and the inner sill to chassis leg was "repaired" with a thin bit of stainless and it was screwed in place then all covered in seam sealer and fibre glass!
not anymore though, heres some pics

Nice 1 David! Love the look of that Daytona yellow mk1 too
Are you plannin on fabbing slightly bigger rear arches like that 1?....good Idea right enough if your not goin down the narrower axle route
Look forward to seeing this 1 out and about :)
thanks craig, im not doing any bodywork on it im just leaving that part for another day/year so it will be about with rusty spots and bubbles for a while.
it will just have a set of rs 4's on it to keep things nice and simple.
Cool mate, gona look smart  will be well woth the work :)
small update this is saturdays work
i finally got motivated this morning to do some work on the mk1. so after id done todays mot's at work i got onto it.
i had to remove the roll cage again after marking the positions to weld in the other 3 roll cage mounting plates and then weld a small ish hole and a crack on the drivers floor.
then its was clean up time on the floor inside and out so i could start undersealing and painting.
i forgot to take pics of the welding but got some of the floor after its been painted with zinc primer inside.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0006-4.jpg
and just as i was tidying up brian came in to make up another tube for his roll cage.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0015-2.jpg
i thought since today was such a nice and warm day (for once) id better get my back side into town and paint the inside floor so it will be dry for getting it out the garage in the morning.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0018.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0017.jpg
while painting i realised that id forgotten to re weld the rear seat back/bulkhead panel at the bottom as some one had started to remove it for some reason, that will be the next job.

thanks guys:D my next jobs are to seal the underside of the floor , brake replacment and electrics as mot much works!
i was workin on the mk1 friday night and all day saturday. the motivations come back again since the finishing lines in sight http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
on friday night i built up the roll cage in the garage and gave it a rub with some sand paper before giving it a coat of top quality smootherite in silver just to tidy it up.
then i ripped out what was left of the headlining, painted the rear bulkhead/parcial shelf gloss black and masked up the windows and sprayed the roof skin satin black. ANYBODY WANT 2 REAR HEADLINING BAR THINGYS??
saturday i had the help of my mate allan ( green boy ) to sort the electrics ( well i was more like his apprentice! http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif ).
we had to untape most of the wiring loom in the engine bay as its been bodged to convert from crossflow to pinto with lots of bad conections, exposed cut wires and lots of tape every where else. i knew it wasnt very safe so it was better to get allan in to check it as hes way better and faster with electrics than me.
with quite a few wires checked, cut out and replaced things like break lights and indicators are starting to work again and it even runs better! http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/banana.gif but we still have some wires behind the dash to check as allan found one that was burnt through http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
after allan went home i put on the rear interior 1/4 panels and sat the roll cage in ready for me to bolt it down next week.
heres some pics of the weekends work

Looking good David, hope Fionas looking after you for all the good work your doing on her car ;)
thanks.
fiona felt guilty for me having to do all the work on the car so she wanted me to have it. shes being nice to me so she can have a shot though :D
time for a little update.
i was supposed to be giving the mex a good going over yesterday but i got a phone call from allan saying he wanted to carry on with sorting the wiring so i ended up working on it instead.
first thing i did was to remove the rear diff to check its condition and ratio as i was told it was a 3.54 and if it was it was going to do a diff swap with the mex but as it turns out its a 3.89 ( same as the mex's ) so i just refitted it.
while the half shafts were out i thought id better sort the rear brakes with new shoes, cylinders, fitting kit and un sieze the hand brake levers.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/cars/Photo0005.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/cars/Photo0004.jpg
allan turned up!
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/cars/Photo0009.jpg
i think thats all the wiring now safe and sorted i just need to sort out some proper front indicators as i i oly have lenses, i might have to make some backs and bulb holders for my mk1 lenses.
time for a little update.

had a bit of a play with the mk1 today. i had the wheels off the mex so i thought id see what the mk1 looks like with the 7 inch revolites on, i really like it. 8)

i managed to do some more bits to the mk1. ive only done bits and peices in the last few weeks as ive not been in the mood for either escort recently http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/idunno.gif
i made a wee centre console for my switches to sit below the original switch panel. then gave them both a coat of satin black

fiona wasnt liking the 2 spots on the front and i think she some how brain washed me as i started to change my mind about them too. they'll be needed in the winter though fiona! http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0007.jpg
every one at my work thinks it looks better without the spots
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/mk2mexico/Photo0001-2.jpg
i made up some better and stronger seat mounting brackets than what was already there but couldnt get the seat angled back far enough so i had to space the seat from the frame, we'll see if it works when there in.

keep it up mate good work :D
little update with the mk1.
i cleaned up the rear floor with the wire wheel and treated it with zactan cure rust and left it over night then went back in today and sprayed on some worth sealer and underseal.
i had no bulb holders for the front indicators so i had to make some out of the mini ones that were fitted which worked out really well. http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
i decided to have a go at fixing the bonnet as its inner frame had detatched itself from the skin and it was also damaged from being fliped up at some point.
the sides had split and the skin had folded at the corners by the hinges, i got a hammer and a block of wood and got it straight ish then i got the welder out and stitch welded the frame to the skin and fixed the cracks. its not finished yet as theres a hole to weld up before it gets a fresh coat of satin black, it'll do for now. http://www.scottisholdskoolescorts.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
