  • Pinto freshen up

This one belongs to a customer, had some issues on the rolling road - the flywheel came loose !! (not off)

Once stripped to get the crank/flywheel double dowelled it was apparent there were more issues with the engine, to quote Mr Tucker of HT racing - "The bores look like they were honed with a housebrick"

Aaron very kindly sorted out the bores with a hone, and dowelled the flywheel/crank also refaced the flywheel/crank faces so it sits square, along with polishing the crank.

Before I started to put it back together I popped the plugs out of the oil galleries and washed them through - the crap that came out was amazing !

New ball bearing in the back of the block, new core plugs in the front two oil gallery holes, new core plugs in the water jacket, new oil pump, rings, mains, big ends, oil seals, spigot bearing, clutch cover and bolts, sump gasket and the bottom end is done.

The head was next on the agenda, it looks to me as if the cam wasn't run in properly, as it is shot to bits, along with the followers !

New HT1 camshaft, followers and spray bar now fitted and valve clearances adjusted ready for re-fitting to the block.

Tomorrow it's: refit head to block, cam timing, fit ancilliaries and run that camshaft in !!
    Cheers Rob.

      Cylindrical aluminium ones

They are 2.8 1mm over size with the valve cut outs machined in.

The engine was originally built by someone other than me or HT racing
      Cheers Rob.

beg me puddin for asking a similar question to Robbos, but how come the pistons are pocketed?
Long rods, long throw crank, high comp pistons, is the cam timing set that critical or does it have a heftily skimmed head and what make are those pistons?
I don't remember having seen any of these in any pintos that I've seen before

Don't know about that particular engine but, in short, yes and yes for any powerful Pinto. The major advances in Pinto power in more recent years are all about cam timing and compression.
Hill climber Mike Rudge was horrified to see Roland Hayes (then operating from his garden shed) pick up a mini grinder and pocket his pistons by eye without any measurement!

The engine builder before me did the pocketing of the pistons, they sit proud of the block face, protruding into the gasket area, the valves are Gp2 inlet and Gp1 exhaust and the cam was a WR40, now replaced with an HT1. I've not CC'd the head, but allegedly it has nearly 11:1 compression - I say allegedly - that's what the owner was told by the chap he purchased the engine from

It has an offset ground std pinto crank, fiesta diesel 1600 rods with cossie rod bolts, giving a 2.2 capacity. The pistons are std 2.8 cologne which have been pocketed (to my thinking these are the weak link in this particular engine).

The flywheel is as light as I've ever seen, 10mm thick and with slotted holes for extra lightness.

I've got it fired up today, and run the cam in for 20 minutes at 2500 rpm, I don't want any re-occurence of the wear on the last cam.

Just got to set the ignition timing 100%, re-torque the head and run through the valves clearances again now the cam's bedded in.
                Cheers Rob.
