is that a home made crane ?

and did you take the engine out with the car on the ground ? must have been hard

brian

Nelly
19-07-2004, 11:48
No had the car on wheel ramps, but lowered the front back down when we hoisted it out. I know the crane looks home made but it is a mate of mine's who I think has had it handed down to him through the generations!! Did the job ok so i'm not complaining!

Must have been tough, though, judging by all that blood on the engine block!

Nelly
19-07-2004, 12:01
Yeah it was like a scene from Kill Bill!!! (Going to have to paint it blue me thinks before it goes back in!)

dasadrew
19-07-2004, 12:03
... then when you get Prince Charles to give you a lift back in with it, the blood won't show up?

Surprised you didnt remove your bulkhead sound pad before you started.

They are that fragile the slightest knock and they snap !

Nelly
20-07-2004, 09:55
Your right Dave, I should have taken it off before hand. We were lucky though, the engine didn't touch it, but it's coming off for cleaning, so i'll make sure it's the last thing to go back on once the engine's back in.

Hows your little "project" coming along lately mate... You`ve gone a bit quiet...

Worse than you expected?? :banghead:

Nelly
09-08-2004, 10:27
Unfortunatley progress has been a bit slow, due to my mate Nick (who's re-building the engine for me), being swamped with loads of other work and then going off on holiday for three weeks!! But he's a really skilled bloke who charges me peanuts for the work he does, so I can't really complain!!

I've made a start cleaning up the engine bay and just bought a set of 7.5 four spokes to go on her, so should all be ready for when the engine's ready, which will hopefully be this side of christmas!!!

Nelly
12-11-2004, 15:22
It's amazing how a broken piston ring can lead to a full on resto!!!

Well while the engine was out, I thought "lets paint the engine bay".......... then you start thinking..........."well if we're painting the engine bay......... might as well do the whole shell"!!!!!! Sound familiar anyone???!!!

Chesney
12-11-2004, 16:30
Brian - it's not too bad but there are bits which lead to more bits... it'll be a smasher when it's done, a real solid straight shell!

by the way there's no telling what he's got lurking in them drawers......i daren't open them!!!

Nelly
12-11-2004, 17:23
It was last painted about 10 years ago Brian, but there's a few little bubbles starting to appear that you can't really see in the photos. They are only minor at the moment, but I know that if I leave it they'll grow into a problem within a couple of years. There's also a bit of filler in the O/S/R wing, which i'm cutting out and replacing with metal.

Debating about chopping the battery tray out and moving the battery into the boot....... What does everyone think?? Will free up some space for a filter king and a pair of 48's!!

Wheres this mexico that needs a resto then ? All i can see is a mex that looks very good and solid

It is really solid Gaz, and it was fully re-built in 91/92 with new inner and outer wings, boot lid, bonnet, sills etc. But for the last few years before I got my hands on it, it had been kept outside and then in a damp garage, which hasn't done it any favours. Many of the panels have got micro blisters starting to appear in the paint, and I know that if I leave it, there only going to become worse. This way if I do it properly now, I shouldn't have to worry about it for another 10-15 years!

Also i've just found an unexpected air vent in the passenger footwell which needs sorting as well!!!!

Finally managed to get a few hours in on the Mex this weekend (her in doors went shopping!!) and finished off stripping the shell down. I'm going to let the bodyshop take the glass out, as if I do it, i'll probably end up breaking the screen!! Bit of rot in the front floor pans, but hopefully i've caught it early enough!! and theres a bit of filler in the O/S/R wing which I knew about, but otherwise it all looks pretty solid. Should be going in for fettling and painting this week.......

Hello guy's,

Not been on here for a while - been setting up a new business which has been taking up all my time, so not had chance to think much about MKII's!

However the other day I managed to get over to the bodyshop that's had my Mex for the last 6 months, and at last i've got some pic's of the progress that's been made so far.......

For what started out as a solid shell, has so far had, 2 new front floor panels, new outer wings, the inner wings have been re-welded as they were litteraly hanging on by a thread!! Whoever fitted them originally wants stringing up!! The inner sills have had some work done as well, but the trickiest job was sorting out the bodged n/s A post and scuttle, which was full of filler.... nice!! The final job to do is sort out the o/s rear wheel arch then she's ready to be prepped for paint........ might be home in another 6 months then!!

Lee, it's a Saleen 281 Coupe, based on a GT, but with different bumpers, skirts, rear spoiler, uprated suspension, exhaust, 20" wheels and different seats. It's only the baby 325bhp model though, they do an "S" which is 500 break! Not the easiest thing to drive in this country as its LHD, manual and wider than a tranny van!

Hello chaps,

Progress has been a been slow since I got the shell back from the body shop - mainly due to me deciding to paint the underside by hand "Frosticles style"! (shitty job - wish i'd paid the extra get it done with the rest of the shell, but the budget was way out of control)!! Re-applied some of the flakey stone-chip and then had a load of diamond white mixed up and got stuck in. Finished up putting 3 coats on it! Think i'm going to have to up the power of the engine though due to the weight of all the paint!!

Yeah not the nicest of job's Kev! Luckily I remembered to wear a hat, so that I didn't have to get me head shaved like you did afterwards!! The plan is to get it back on the road for April/May, i've got most of of the bits to finish it, just waiting for the axle to come back and i'm thinking of putting a new loom in it - biggest problems making the time to do it all!!

Been a while I know...... But finally got some progress on YUE to post about!!!

Unfortunately work has virtually ground to a halt over the last few months, mainly due to work commitments and my lack of mechanical skills! I was also getting pretty frustrated with it and have had to walk away on more than one occasion, as nothing has seemed to want to go back as easy as it came apart!! Anyone who say's that putting these cars back together after a major resto is enjoyable, is either lying, or does it for a living and has got more patience than me!!

But over the last couple of days, with a lot of help from a couple of very handy mates (they basically did all the work - I just made the tea and got in the way, big thanks to Rodders & Simon), we've finally got the engine, box, prop and rear axle in!!! Lakes tour here we come......!

Got a bit more done this weekend, big thanks to "Sparky" Greg for sorting out the electrics and the monster cable for the battery in the boot ;) .

The exhaust was right b*tch to fit!! But got there in the end, yes it's an Ashley system........... I know! Had to improvise the back box mounts to stop it fouling the rear valance, and had to cut about 2 inches off the middle section in order to stop the back section catching the tramp bars, but hopefully when we fire it up it should be ok........

Just got the brakes, fuel lines, fuel pump, and interior to sort out now.......!!!

Nelly
17-01-2007, 13:11
Not really Ian, it has had one fitted before by a previous owner (although it just had the standard tank fitted when I bought it), so all the holes for the straps were in place. The standard rubber filler neck is just a touch too short though (bought a new one from the MKII Club). When I bought the tank a few years ago (thanks Leon!) it came with a longer filler neck, which looked like it had been made up to fit, but when I pulled it out of storage, I found its starting to perish, so will probably buy a bit of black hose the right diameter and cut it to suit.

My main concern is if the sender units still working, as i've not tried it yet. I'm presuming that these are the same as the ones fitted to a standard tank??? If I need to get a new one.

Martin trout who built yue originally is a mate of mine and was round last night looking at this thread.
He was stunned at the amount of rust but it was 14 years ago when the bodywork was started. He was saying the hole front end was replaced with new genuine panels but the bodyshop that fitted them made a right mess of it
He's now planing on registering on the site so he can put up some posts himself

Nelly
18-01-2007, 18:31
Hi Cyd,

That would be great to speak to Martin and find out a bit more information about the old girl. I've got a huge history file with the car including all the original invoices that Martin spent on the car back in 91-92 (some of the prices would make you cry)!!

I know that my bodyshop had to basically remove and re-fit the inner wings as they hadn't been put on very well at all, so that would explain a lot. I think the reason that it had rusted so badly was that after Martin sold the car, it went through 3 or 4 owners fairly quickly, who didn't give it as much love as he had done. I know for a fact that one owner didn't have a garage, so it was kept outside, and the guy I bought it from, had it stored in a very damp garage for over a year before I bought it. It's also very low and I think the front floor may have been scraped on speed humps, hence why the floors were shot. Also he must have spent a fortune at the chromers!! Very 90's!

Cheers
Neil.

Hi, Martin Trout here, finally managed to register!!! Can't believe the state the car ended up in and great to see you doing such a great job on the new restoration. The car must have had at least £15,000 spent on it since I owned it!! All the receipts and documentation I had for it were in a blue folder going back to 1980, have you still got the folder?? I spent approx 5 years trying to rebuild it and unfortunately gave up when we were expecting our first child. All of the stove enamelling, goodridge piping, stainless nuts and bolts were all done by me. The seats were capri seats that I had faced in leather and the 7.5 alloy wheels were squeezed under the arches after some serious beating with a 6ft bar with an angle on the end! Where are you situated? Would like to hear from you, I've got loads of stories about it if you are interested.

All striped up and nowhere to go!!

Finally got round to getting the stripes on the Mex (think there on right)?? Thought about putting them on myself, but realised it would be a sure fire way of ruining a stripe kit!! So got a guy I know "Ken the Stripe" who fits vinyl graphics for a living to do it........ I reckon it's the best 30 quid i've spent on the car so far!! However he did say "I don't want to do another one anytime soon"! It was a PJG kit, but he still had to do quite a bit of fettling on the front and back arches.

Just getting the arches rolled will do the job, what about a spacer kit and no rubbing at all anywhere????

Got 175/50's on at the moment, which I know are not everyones cup of tea, as they are a bit stretched around a wheel that was designed for 205's!

The arches are rolled on mine, but i've also been recently told by a previous owner, that the whole rear arches were also massaged out slightly (I couldn't tell) in order to get them to fit. I think the sensible way of getting them to fit, is to have the axle narrowed, which I think Paul Spence has done on his RS2000? Frosty used to have them on his, but he just drove em down the kerb until the fitted!!;) :D

I've had it rear disc'ed since it was last on the road, and I think by looking at it, the disc's sit slightly further in than the drums do (but i'm probably wrong)! So i'm hoping that when it goes back on it's wheels, that I might have a bit more clearance to get 195/55's on which I think will look more in keeping.

Alternatively you could just fit an X-Pack and be done with it!!:D

Been having a big push the last couple of weeks to try and get the Mex finished. It seems though that all the little jobs that should be straight forward are the ones that seem to take the longest!! It doesn't help when most of the modified parts you've bought have to be modified again to get them to fit properly!!!

We nearly got her to turn over yesterday:eek: ! But there's a few earthing issues to sort out, and the brakes have been a nightmare, but will hopefully be resolved this week:banghead: !! Then it should just be a case of interior back in and away we go........... I bet it aint that simple though:rolleyes: !!!

Big thanks to Rodders and Greg for letting me make them tea, while they do all the work!!;)

Finally managed to get the front brakes fitted this evening. Have had a right load of hassle with them, mainly due, to them being supplied with several sets of the wrong spacers and various bolts, and then when I finally got the right bits through, I had to get 5mm milled of the calipers so that they would clear the bells!!:banghead: . Hopefully there all sorted now and that they stop as well as they look!!

Right guys, had a rather momentus day today!!!........... After nearly 3 years, my Mex was finally driven out of the workshop under it's own steam!!!!!:wav:

There's still a few bits and bobs to sort out, such as fit the centre console, tidy up some wiring, wire up the spots, fit the boot badges, sort out a ****y mudflap! and i'm still waiting for the hand brake cable to arrive (come on retro Dave, sort it out)! It's then going down to Northampton Motorsport for the front suspension and tracking to be set up properly, then a run on the rollers to make sure the carbs are ok, an MOT, and with a bit of luck it might make it to the pod next Sunday!!

I've also got to give it a dam good clean! There's about 3 months worth of dust and crap on it at the moment, although it doesn't look too bad in the pictures.

I would just like to say a very big thankyou to everyone who's helped me get the car to it's present state. Unfortunately my spannering skills are rather limited! And without alot of assistance I don't think the car would have ever got to this stage, in my ownership anyway.

Special thanks goes out to, Greg, Simon, Matt and Jason, for their help and time on the spanners, Chris for the parts and advice. Bob for the bodywork and paint, Paul for the engine, Burton's and West Wales Rally spares for releaving me of the hard earned!! and an extra big thanks to Rodders who did the majority of the work in getting it back up and running, and who's very good at "making a bracket" and weilding the grinder!!!:D Plus thanks to all you guys on this board for the advice and encouragement .

Spot on so far Paul! Fired up virtually 1st time (once we'd got the timing set up right)! The carbs seem OK too, considering they've just been sat on a shelf for 3 years??!!!

A very weird feeling throwing water over something that you've been trying to keep dry and damp free for the last three years!!!! I'd forgotton how long the bloody things take to dry off though!!!!
