Which dealer was my car from

Hi all,

My RS2k registration has a "SML" prefix which looking at the registration decoder seems to be "Middlesex" which kind of makes sense - all the history I have points it to be a southern car Middlesex, Essex, Kent and London in the bits and pieces I have.

Would anyone know the RS dealer in Middx in 1977, I would like to get proper dealer registration plates if I can - will DVLA offer help?

The printout of old V5's used to include the application for a "Vehicle Mark" often with the original dealers stamp on it, don't know if you can still get these printouts from the DVLA, other than that I can't see them being of much help.

Yes mate you can still get them, write to customer services dept, DVLA although it now costs to get them, think its a fiver. Got all mine, even tells you the salesmans name.

Form V888 from DVLA is the one you want. You need to complete Sections 1 and 5 if you are the registered keeper and send them £5. They will send you the "Previous Keeper" History.

Done mine already - will report back when I get some news.

Some RS2s (my road car included) were supplied new from ordinary Ford dealers who got them from RS dealers prior to registration. They would then be registered in the selling dealer's area, not the RS dealer Ford first delivered them to.
Some RS dealers were very low profile too and didn't really justify being listed. Others of course were "household" names. Chelmsford would have been the one a lot of East London/Essex RSs came from.
I too don't recall Dees of Croydon in the early lists - but they certainly were later (and sponsored the Tim Brise, ex-John Taylor, car that led the first day of the 1980 RAC Rally (on Kleber tyres) (and all people remember of that rally these days is Toivonen winning, when he actually only lucked into it because Dunlop screwed the works Escorts).

Tricentral Motors was the only RS dealership in Essex in the 1980's.
But I think it was most proberbly from Frank Gates of Woodford which has an Essex address but is a part of North East Greater London.

Got the sales agreement, number plates and tax disc holder all with Doe on them. All genuine items as they were fitted to the car on the delivery day to the 1st owner. I'm the 2nd owner.:D

Bit OT but the other Tricentrol (Dunstable not Chelmsford) was selling some massive percentage of all the RS parts sold in UK (about half? - as much as all other RS dealers put together).

Trimoco were the RS dealer in Chelmsford during the 80's, and Doe's in Witham were definitely an RS dealer. (I used to live just down the road from them)! Other dealers like Candors in Braintree & Colchester weren't RS accreditied. There were also lots of other satellite dealers like Youngs in Tiptree, that were not RS dealers, but could of probably got you one if you really wanted. They would have all used the Chelmsford VRO though, and the cars bought from these dealers would have all had Essex prefix's such as: 00, VW, VX, JN, TW etc. I'm not so hot on the "south Essex" dealers such as Perry's and Allen of Romford, but i'm sure Mr H will know!

These days, due to Fords area restructuring policy in the 90's, north Essex is pretty much controlled by Dovercourt and Dagenham Motors have got the south of the county.....

so my mk2 was from Kent, and I knew my Mex was from London and GOO's obviously an Essex car, my how they have traveled :rolleyes:

Had a quick scan through what the DVLA sent through yesterday. My car was originally purchased through Frank Gates of Woodford E18.

Have now got all the V5's plus the original application for the first road tax which was £50 for 12 months in 1977.

When I got my first car in 1989 it was £50 for six months:eek: .

SML has spent all it's life in South London or Essex (but it's recently moved out to Surrey!):cool:

Would recommend investing £5 to see the history file.
