View Full Version : Ruddy's RS1600i
Ok so its not a MK2 but I thought some of you may be interested in what I've been doing to my RS16i that I bought a couple of weeks ago ........
Started off as a bit of a clean and sort a few mechanical gremlins and now looks like I'm going bufty.

Shell is now bare , time to start degreasing prior to delivering to Mr John Taylor for a full body respray, second pic shows the nice factory paint revealed when fuel tank removed , usually a 16i rust trap .

perfect for that rwd conversion
I agree :D
Believe me gents its already been considered , if the shell was a bit crusty that would be the way to go but I am not willing to butcher a nice original car .
Made myself a turnover frame and got the car on it tonight , don't know what was shaking more , the car or my legs , I was shi**ing myself . Gave the floor 10 minutes with some panel wipe and its looking slightly bufty.

I love stripping waxol of a car and finding it in that condition good job, well done
Is that waxoyl, ziebart or underseal on the underneath of that - its kept the floor MINT! Would like to find out what it is as I'll be giving my RS the same treatment after its been painted.
Well done that man.

Well gents work continues , had the underside fully prepped , etched and now it is finished in Dove Grey . Need to add the flashes of red and black overspray that were present from the production line but I may leave that until it comes back from the full respray (as they may overspray everything anyway :p ) . Just got to make a frame up to roll it about on to get it to the painter.

stunning mate i have to take my hat off to you ;) a keen eye for detail
Got the satin under the arches (hard to photo as looks too glossy with flash) with the right overspray patterns, took plenty photos of the overspray when stripping it down (sad I know) .Satin flash along bottom edge of sills and on front panel at bottom edge where the grille sits. Put a few parts back on, all the original brake and fuel pipes underneath cleaned up as new as they were thickened with waxoil. Fitted the rear arms mainly to get them out of the way on the bench, they are only loosly fitted as they need to come back out to fit shock gaiters and track arms.Ian will no doubt recognise the washer bottle cap. Then I thought I had better go in and help with a few Xmas activities :o

Been cleaning the loom and running it through the engine bay, lost a few labels off some of the connectors but I am sure I will figure it out. Waiting for a big parts delivery when the shops re-open then I can move things on a bit more. Spent most of today removing the old alarm system, what a ****ing nightmare, was wired into everything and it was done properly, all the joints were soldered.

Hally,
been too ****ing cold and I have been a bit under the weather the last week or so hence no real progress . Have ordered a few more new parts as I have just been paid :D so maybe fit those when they arrive and post a couple of pics. Doubtful the car will be out early part of this year though :o
Had a delivery so especially for Hally I braved the elements and had an hour or two in the garage. New rear lights fitted and wired up, new rear bumper and plastics re-fitted along with the wiper motor and rear washer. New front indicators were fitted allowing the headlamps to be fitted finally and these are now fully wired up. Also bought a brand new pair of driveshafts so I am getting near the point where I need to have the engine rebuilt (this is going to a local company) and the gearbox restored (this is going to one of Oggies contacts). Got the glass and seals back in the doors and the sunroof back in although I still need a bronze glass for this (Hally what did you do with the Ghia you were telling me about at Kames ?).

oh - looks great paul
Not a lot to report lately , fitted a new brake servo and a new master cylinder which allowed me to tighten up all the brake pipes (however I think they may be coming back of for a respray). Refitted the rear screen which was a bit of a milestone as I got it back in without breaking it thus retaining the original dealer sticker. Fitted the front bumper, just waiting for a spare overrider as I snapped a stud in one of mine. Windscreen company coming on Monday to refit new front screen then I can get the dash in and tidy up some of the wiring.
Gonna start stripping the engine block down next week and taking it to the engine builders for cleaning , inspection and measuring and then I will have an idea of what I need to do to it. Tried to get a shot showing the whole car in one photo.

hey paul where you hiding?
Just a short report , I had the gearbox stripped by one of Sir Steve Ogles contacts as the 16i box is notoriously weak. On stripdown we were pleasantly surprised at how good the box was, negligable play in the bearings and no wear or damage to the cogs. Anyway as it was stripped I had the casings away and got them bead blasted then it was rebuilt with all new bearings (made sense seeing as it was apart), seals and gaskets. All the bolts were replaced with new or replated items. Next on the list is the engine block.
I told you I hadn't sold it Spence / Hally :wav:

 nice to see the casting in its natural state, or has it been lacquered,
No lacquer Dave, just properly blasted by someone who knows what they are doing, chilled grit first then a new bag of glass beads...........just have to try and keep fingerprints off it now :) .

hey paul wots going on with the 1600i , are you on strike?
Not on strike but definately a go slow :) . Dropped all this off at the local engine shop for ultrasonic cleaning and measuring. All bearings were still on std size but had one rogue piston in for some reason. Getting the crank reground , new bearings , block just needs honed and new rings. Should pick it all back up next week.

great work car looks stunning  :D
Re-assembled the bottom end , picked up a new oil pump , clutch kit and engine mounts today so thought I would stick this all back together. Head will be getting done in the next week or so (when funds allow) , trying to assemble as much as possible then slide it under the car and lift it up , I bet it goes that easy :o

Paul how were all the alloy bits cleaned?
Brian, they were glass bead blasted, they are in their raw state, no lacquer or coating after blasting.
New driveshafts installed today and new discs , blue bolts visible in pics are for mounting the calipers on.

top job looking beautiful
Oh yes :) :) :) :)
The car now fires on the key and will tick over, slight misfire, could be a tight valve, will recheck them, at least I know the coils/sensor lead and ECU are working ok. Fluid in and brakes bled but front hubs are tight to turn (not brake related) so need further investigation. All lights, wipers , horn etc are sorted.
Looks like the wife will be getting rid of the trim from the spare room soon :p
